Race day dawned in Poland, pulling back the veil on what was going to be another wet bicycle racing event. The excitement levels were on an all-time high though, as we readied ourselves for the first World Cup of the year. The track was full of moisture indeed, but it soon became apparent that it would still reward those who dared to attack it as the grip seemed to be available if you were ready to trust it.
In the junior women's category, all eyes were on the first year juniors who left their mark on the competition already in yesterday's qualifying session. After signing up for one of the top teams of the circuit, young Danish rider Rosa Marie Jensen has apparently made the most of the opportunity to learn from the likes of Loic Bruni and Finn Iles, and she put on a clinic as she stormed to victory in her World Cup debut. #USDH ripper, first-place qualifier Aletha Ostgaard had some issue before the first split of the track, and although she managed to match Rosa Marie's pace in the following sectors it wasn't enough to make up for the time lost, leaving Lina Frener and Eliana Hulsebosch to complete the podium.
In the junior men's category, the Yeti/Fox team took early control of the hot seat with Tyler Waite and Jonty Williamson doing the turquoise proud (Tyler matching Loic Bruni's winning time from Q1 yesterday BTW). It wasn't until we got to the Alran-Vermette-Alran qualifying winning sandwich that Tyler's time was under any sort of threat, but Till Alran ran out of speed towards the end of his run to put an end to his bid for glory today. Asa Vermette turned the first split green as he took to the track with trademark aggression and flow, but he lost the front on a slippery inside line leaving only one rider standing between Yeti/Fox and a 1-2 finish. Max Alran held his nerve however, delivering a great looking run that saw him become the first rider to go under 3:08 all week, and get his season off to a winning start.
