There is a fair amount of room, mine is a large but I would say you'd be fine on a medium with one
I do miss the climb switch on long climbs or road rides but the 2017 version comes with a climb switch on the low speed side and retains all adjustments, or you can get the upgrade kit for the 2016 ones. However the way the way the suspension is designed it gives little pedal bob anyway

it works very well and when mounted that way doesn't bottom out into the frame. I also let all the pressure out and tested it before riding, expensive mistake otherwise.......
