Looks like they're trying to make the slow speed compression adjustable on the fly - the chamber volume adjustment has a tooled dial as that is something you would only adjust if you were changing the spring rate (or travel settings) which is not usually something you would do whilst out on a ride. I see the rebound dial at the bottom of the shock is also adjustable on the move.

Side saddle DB. It would make tuning easier since the knobs would be more accessible.
