I am going to do some suspension setup this weekend on one of my bikes. I had been doing some research and came across this "trick" people figured out for the Grip2 damper. I wanted to ask around here and see if anyone has tried it, heard of it, ext - just curious to learn more cuz its interesting. Also interested if there are any other odd tricks like that for other suspension products, like for example the GripX2 doesnt like being ran fully open - and imo runs a lot smoother once you close down the compression contrary to what you'd expect.
Technique:
Close HSR to 2–3 clicks from fully closed. Open LSR to 6–10 clicks. Leave compression (LSC/HSC) relatively open.
How It Works:
Grip2 uses a shared mid-valve for both compression and rebound. HSR adjusts a leaf spring (via VVC) that preloads the rebound shim stack.
- Closing HSR stiffens the rebound shims, which restricts oil flow through the mid-valve during compression.
- This reduces mid-valve spiking and harshness.
- Opening LSR adds a bleed circuit for rebound flow, preventing packing.
Result: You indirectly tune compression damping by stiffening the rebound stack while keeping rebound control intact.
Here's what's going on.
The midvalve (rebound piston bypass) on those fork dampers is pretty restrictive and gives a harsh feeling to the damping. The low speed rebound ports (LSR) are a bypass that works in both directions. Faster rebound also allows more oil to bypass the midvalve piston ports on compression and makes the fork less harsh. Conversely the more you wind in the LSR (low speed rebound) the more oil has to flow through the piston ports and the harsher it gets.
The workaround is to use the HSR adjuster more than you normally would for rebound control and run the LSR as open as you can. This gives you better compression damping with a rebound setting that still has enough to keep you getting bounced.
Doesn't work on the GRIPX2 because they put a check valve on that LSR rebound port. But does work on the GRIP2 and GRIP2VVC.
