My son is 9 but is tall - 148cm height with 73cm inseam.
He needs a new bike and we would like to get him a full suspension this time round after he had a lot of fun on a Scott Ransom 600 on holiday.
My problem is, size wize he is at the top end of kid bikes but at the bottom end of adult bikes. This is a big purchase financially for us so I don’t want to get him something he will be grown out of next year.
Our budget is under £1000 - we are looking at buying second hand, or if we can find an adult bike that will fit him then may put it through a cycle to work scheme as I think this will get us about 40% off.
Please can anyone recommend some adult bikes he will fit? Or should we stick to a 26” youth bike, like the Scott ransom was? I’m getting confused by the size guides as they seem to contradict themselves, although maybe I’m reading them wrong…for example, Kona say on their size guide he should fit an adult small because his inseam falls into their 66-74 category. But then the standover height on thier small frames is 75.5cm. So surely that would be too big for him??
Thanks to anyone who can give some advice!
What’s your price range?
Most adult bikes won't work in my experience. Like you mentioned, the standover height and the reach numbers are just going to be off, even if the recommended height range matches. My recommendation is buy a youth oriented model. You may have to resign yourself to buying a new bike again next year. Once he hits his growth spurt he could shoot up fast.
