Sram Guide brake issue

Hi all,

I have an issue with my brakes and needing advise please.
Originally the rear brake held pressure ok but the lever was not rebounding quickly.
My local shop rebuilt both front and back brakes with new kits but since then the rear brake is not holding pressure and gone soft.
It has been back to the shop twice to have the brake bleed but it is still soft, they have now told me there is nothing they can do and it needs replacing.
My issue is the brake was holding pressure before the rebuild, is it possible the kit has not been fitted correctly or are they right and it needs to be replaced?

Thanks for any help.

That's a tough one Mate. There was the whole "Don't call it a recall." thing where they sent out thousands of replacement levers (Or perhaps hundreds of thousands.) a year or two ago. So one would think that those bad parts are finally out of the system by now. But that "Not rebounding quickly." exactly describes the original issue that they had. Perhaps your local shop still has bad parts in stock for your replacements, Or it could be that your levers do need replacing. Only the lawyers can tell at this point.

If I took my bike into a shop to work on something that was working somewhat normally before the warranty replacement, stopped working completely after they worked on it, then was told by said shop that I needed to replace it completely after their work, that shop would never get my business again.

SRAM brakes are definitely annoying at times and I am having the same dead rear caliper as you are with my Code Rs, but that shop sounds like they're trying to back out of an issue that they helped complicate and are now putting the costs back on you.

How old is your bike/brakes?

I have a Commencal which had the same problem. It was a few weeks out of warranty when I asked about it and they went ahead and warrantied it for me anyway. Either SRAM stood up for their product or Commencal ate it; I don't know.

In either scenario, I'm extremely happy with the customer service. Try to get the brakes warrantied/recalled.

Thanks all for your advice.

Ok so I see now a lot of online discussion around these brakes having the same issue, but that doesn't explain why it is now not holding pressure.

Mmm, not sure where to go from here, the bike is 5 years old so no warranty but has not had a lot of use (bike in question is a Trance Advance but I have 2 bikes and mainly ride a hardtail)
Tempted just to get a set of G2s fitted and just move on but it's not cheap, can I get G2 levers only and leave the Guide calipers on, should I push back at the shop and get them to sort it out, surely after having the Guides rekitted they should hold pressure ok?

Yes, you should be able to mate G2 levers to the Guide brake lines. I think G2 is just the re-branded version of Guide with the internal piston fix. I did something similar once with my old Avid Juicy brakes.

To be sure, you could try bleeding the brakes one more time to see if it's just a bad bleed.

Anyone with more specific knowledge, please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.
