Has anyone influenced someone to buy a bike? I have influenced 4-5 ppl in 1 year. How did you decide to get into mountain biking? My mom bought me a walmart mtb when I was like 8-9. Then like 7 yrs later I bought a "real" mtb, then 1 yr later upgraded. Lemme hear your stories. Doesn't HAVE TO be mtb.

That's an oddly worded question, but I'll see what I can do for an answer... I was a teenage roady back in early eighties in SoCal. My first MTB was a sort of a factory Klunker in the form of a Schwinn Sidewinder. It was a straight tubed beach cruiser with moto bars, five speeds on a friction shifter and two brakes. I used to do "Freestyle" tricks, basically imitating what I did on my "Freestyle" skateboard, in the neighbors paved front yard. Then I started hearing about people racing these things on dirt and I got my first real MTB. It was a Dorado Sherpa, which was a rebranded Specialized Rock Hopper frame build up with different parts by a company in Oregon. I broke two of those.

When the second one broke I was living in Portland going to culinary school and living with my most important MTB influence. I'm ashamed that I can't remember his name right now but he is the person that introduced me to downhill. He had done a few races back home in Idaho aboard his crazy tubed Haro hardtail and always led the descents on our rides. So then I bought my first "Real" MTB which was a GT Avalanche with perhaps the first in the state Rock Shox Judy XC fork. I was one of the lucky few who got to rebuild their fork in the living room after the OG plastic cartridges failed and were warranted in the first week. That was '94 I think.

I got into mtb in 2010 I was 17, had two friends in school that raced downhill and one of them convinced me to ride a begginer's trail and I loved it. The funny thing is I didn't know how to even ride a bike till 17, I learned how to pedal and 6 months later I got into downhill. I've had some bikes since then,a crappy rigid bike, raleigh mojave(firts incursion into disc brakes and suspension), 2nd hand trek y11 and know I'm the proud owner of a rebranded khs dh300 and a trek marlin. I got two friends and my dad into mountain bike since the beggining.
Sorry if any mistakes, english isn't my first language.

since kid i always liked to ride my bike, at 11 or 12 i received from my parent's a 200€ new mtb bike, witch was the entry level bike of the brand, rode it around town and some little trails (with 0 tech level) upgraded the bike a bit and then a few years later i got a focus dirt jump bike for my birthday (DJ bike but with gears), it came with a rst fork but i swapped right away for a rock shox tora(this was in 2008) started riding a bit of steet, some dirt jumps, and then me and my friends discovered some trails and started riding them as descending stairs, i rapidly swapped my dirt jump tires for some 2.3 schwalbe tires, upgraded the bike from mechanical discs to hydraulic and was upgrading what i was braking.
at some point the tora blew up and went to warranty , and the store loaned me a rock shox argyle and a wheel with 20mm hubs. from that i went to my first urban race where was good fun , and 3 days later i ended up being stolen by 7 guys(was 15) on the middle of the city , ended up without a bike and paying for a fork and wheel .
for months i was riding on the trails on a loaned bmx bike and a crappy hard tail to when i finely bought my first fs bike that was an umf freaddy bike, witch was like a kona stinky, got the best specked version on end of the year clear out .
from that started racing dh at regional level
in 2011 bought a transition tr450 and continued racing the regional series and doing the nearest nationals races .
in 2013 joined a team and get to do the national series, doing last year top 20 on the nationals and 16 on national champs.
this year decided to race the enduro series with a few good races on the years before, coining from a broken wrist did a 9 in the first national, and on the second on did 5 overall with some crashes on the stages, and the week after had a crash training and fractured my shoulder blade skipping the nationals and some local races, just passed 2 months only doing road and can't wait to it the dirt, what a powerful addiction this is

How did you earn all that money?? Or were you helped? I bought my bike all by myself ($1100). Took like a year to earn that!

I have to admit, it is hard to save money, but it can be done. I'm not a party-er, never tried and drugs and garbage like that! Striving to be in the fire service. Tryna make good choices the best I can.
