My first bike was a Orbea sport 29 10. It was a really good climber, more for xc.

Another one you can look at is the Raleigh tokul 1. Has a slacker ht angle, 650b wheels. Seems like a good bike. More for "trail".

Both are in your price range.

Most of the big brands have good options at that price point. Specialized, Trek, etc. I would just go to your local bike shop and talk to them about a bike. Or go through jensonusa.com or chainreactioncycles.com.

Can you not get a decent Rockhopper for that money ?
Race Geo as standard.
Cannondale's Trail range look nice for the price as well

I know that its necessary to have a good bike but other than this you also have to focus on what to carry while mountain biking. Here below is the link for what to carry on mountain biking. I think that will be useful for you.

I'm not sure if you have bought a bike yet, but the Diamondback's Hook or Line is a great starting bike. I have the higher end Sync'r and love it to death. Beasty hardtail for sure.

For your budget, I'd look for a used bike that's a few seasons old. You'll likely get more bang for your buck. Start looking locally, so you can check the bike out in person before purchasing.
