Is a size small really too small?

I've always ridden mediums, but I was wondering if I might get a little more control out of a small. I'm 5'9ish and 140lbs, what do you guys think? the bike in perticular is the 2011 Giant Glory 0

there might not be more control if you're cramped on your bike.

You're looking at a decrease of 2-inches on your top tube. That's a huge difference. At 5'9", I wouldn't recommend it. You'll definitely feel cramped.

It's like 29'' and 26'', like drivetrain on right or left, like fat and knobby tires vs thin and slick tires. It's best to try both and then make a decision.
