I've currently been using a 3x9 system and I hate it. I was wandering what you guys and gals would buy? oh and I'm on a budget of $200 dollars.

Personally I've been using a single front chainring since about '95 when I started riding and racing downhill. People worry that if you have a small enough chainring to climb, that you'll spin out on the downhills, but I've rarely found it the case and even if you do, there's always tucking and pumping the terrain. Just get the biggest rear cassette you can. Luckily for you, most of the cheaper ones come with lower gears. I even run a Shimano Megarange on my crossish trail mongrel. A chainguide becomes necessary unless you try out one of them new fangled thick thin chainrings. They're worth a try. Chainguides are expensive.

Replace the top ring with a guard and get a clutched derailleur. Far better than any 2X guide, imo.
