Hi, I race motocross and have been looking at getting into MTBs for a while now but never really had any money sitting around but now I think I have enough for a decent bike. So my question is what would be a good bike for me to start out on? Some sort of hardtail? I would be using it for trail riding, riding around the pits at the motocross track, and next year when I go off to college use it to ride around campus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Nice! Many people start out on hardtails and move up from there. For what you've mentioned, I think a cheap used hardtail would be best. You won't have to worry about it as much when at school.

Check out our classifieds, ridemonkey.com, and mtbr.com for a bunch of options. Most hardtails priced $750+ will have a decent parts kit, and you can always upgrade as you progress. Because you want to use it for trail riding, look for the XC type and not dirt jumpers. I'd suggest a short (50-60mm) stem, wide bars, and 2.3 inch tires as your first upgrades.

Alright thanks for that. Also, another noob question; what size wheels should I look at running? Back when I rode bmx I always used 20" wheels and and my cuzs had some cruisers with the 24"s and those felt pretty good to me.

26" for sure, especially if you're looking to ride trails.
