best cheap or free video editing software?

I know I'm a few years behind the curve but I just got a video camera and wanted to know what is everyone using for video editing software?
whats good and cheap or even better free?
what should I stay away from?
I use a Microsoft but I have access to a mac.

Macs come with Imovie, that is what i have been using for mine. Its no final cut pro, but gets the job done
