I had great results with Manitou forks. They're not as expensive as most other forks and are highly modular. Granted this was ten years ago at least. But I don't think their construction has changed too much. Springs are easily swappable. The travel is easily changeable. I could take a six inch travel fork and switch out the spring and damping shaft and turn it into a four inch travel fork pretty easily. I even made some delrin spacers to shorten it even more. With a stiff spring and the right damping settings I would hardly ever feel bottom out except in a huck to flat situation. Also, because of the backward brace design, if you route your front brake hose right, you can do one bar spin without snapping it off. Yeah... I always ran a front brake on my dirt jumper.
