Upgrade rear hub or freehub

Hi all,

I have a giant stance 1 from 2018. It came with very basic hubs and freehub with lots of slack.

i want to upgrade the freehub only if possible, or just get a whole new hub with an upgraded freehub.

The rear cassette is a HG500-10, so HG 10 speed shimano.

1. Are there any upgrade options without changing the whole hub?

2. What hub or freehub would you suggest with higher engagement?

also to note, the current disk i have is a 6 bolt, so that would need to be a feature on the hub. TIA.

It is important to note that higher engagement, while feeling nicer when stamping on the pedals, can be detrimental to your bike's suspension performance while descending as it may contribute to pedal kickback, Loris Vergier's mechanic was talking about running a slower engagement for this very reason.

The wheel is not only not worth upgrading, it will be next to impossible to find parts to upgrade that hub or the hubs internals.  It won't at all be worth the money to replace the hub, buy new spokes and then spend $150 dollars to have the rear wheel re-built using a $30 dollar hoop.  In this case, you're better off trying to find a used rear wheel.  (my take, is that you're better off doing none of these things, riding the bike as is and then selling it and moving on when you feel the need or are more addicted to the sport that you start making bad financial decisions)

If memory serves, that bike has a QR rear wheel, or it may be one of the odd generation of giant's where they used a 5mm through axle that is the same diameter as the QR.  So, you need to figure out which of those two you have and that will dictate what sort or rear wheel.  We can figure out what you have if you remove the rear wheel from the frame, and take pictures of the hub end caps/axle where it attaches to the frame.  Please also include photos of the frame on both sides where the hub/qr/axle/derailleur hanger goes in.

At any rate, your best bet is finding a used wheelset or rear wheel, pre-built with the proper hub configuration.  Hope or dtswiss are solid hub choices from that generation.  Otherwise, there are some cheap chinese hubs of that vintage that were acceptable, such as bitex.

Overall, I wouldn't pay to upgrade that bike with regards to hub engagement.  That is not going to be the biggest limiting factor of performance, and you're headed down a road of 150-350 dollars worth of upgrading on a bike that's worth about 500-700.  Just ride that thing into the ground and save your dollars and buy something in the 1,200 - 1,8000 range second hand and be better off for it.
