I'm just getting started in Mtb in Texas mostly XC. I have a GT Zaskar 9r. What do I need to get started besides helmet off course. Any help will be appreciated.

A Zaskar Sixer was my first proper mountain bike. First choose between clips or, as some are starting to do, flats. Then get a quality pair of chamois, aka tight girly looking pants that you can then hide under more stylish attire. I favor cut off Dickies. A non cotton shirt of some wicking nature is nice. From there all you really need is water and a way to carry it. A Camel Back type bag is most common and allows you to carry a limited tool kit and flat fixing needs. Hand and eye protection are a nice option, but not necessary. And A positive mental attitude, generally displayed as a smile will get you far. Ride On Man.

Thank you for the response. It will be awhile before I can ride now because I broke my plated collarbone yesterday. Bent the plate, cracked the bone in three spots, it's a mess in there. Needs surgery so I have some down time to save up money for some stuff that you mentioned. What about bike upgrades? I'm thinking brakes because I've been told they suck by people who rode my bike.
