Hello anyone with more knowledge than me! I am looking to replace a square taper bottom bracket on a specialized women's pitch 27.5 with a more up to date version with new cranks. Hope fully going from a 3x to a 2x as the rider is just getting into the sport and looking for simplicity. Sram or Shimano doesn't really matter, most likely replacing the whole drivetrain with something a little more reliable than Tourney.
What I need to know is what bottom bracket standard will fit in the current hub shell. cranks can come after that.

Note- Not my bike, Just got my mom back into the sport after a 16 year absence.

Since it's a square taper, it's almost certainly a standard threaded "Euro." BB. So the main thing to be concerned with in terms of fit is the width of the BB shell. 68 & 73 are the two main options. So grab a ruler and take a measure. If you're mail ordering it, you may need to get the appropriate BB tool for installation. Or just go down to your local bike shop and they'll set you up. Great to hear that Mom is excited about riding again. Hook her up and be sure to give her plenty of encouragement!
