The vertical bike rack world keeps growing, and we’re here for it. Having bigger brands with deep pockets enter the arena only validates that vertical hitch racks are the future of bike transport. But let’s face it: no matter who joins the party, ALTA Racks still stands apart. In our view, nobody else is delivering the same level of engineering, capacity, and long-term support that we do.
We recently saw an article from Two Wheeling Tots comparing the Thule Revert, VelociRAX, and ALTA Racks. We appreciate their thorough reviews (we’ve worked with them before and know they take a fair, hands-on approach), but we want to respond to a few points made. So, here’s a friendly rebuttal straight from Ali at ALTA Racks, the designer, builder, and aerospace engineer behind our products.

Why Competition Doesn’t Phase Us
Yes, brands like Thule, Yakima, VelociRAX, and LOLO have jumped in. But the truth is:
If you’re looking for something that’s truly overbuilt, tested, and backed for a lifetime, ALTA Racks stands on its own.
We don’t say that lightly. We have:
- The highest load capacity per rack and per bike in the vertical rack category.
- Systems engineered to handle extreme weights—think e-bikes, fat bikes, even multiple downhill rigs—without a hiccup.
- A lifetime warranty on our products
- Truly USA-made products (built right here in Utah with local resources), while most other bike rack companies play games and obfuscate their manufacturing origins.
With that in mind, let’s dive into some of the specific points raised about the Thule Revert and why ALTA Racks takes a different approach.

1. “Lift Assist” vs. Practical Engineering
Thule Revert & VelociRAX: The Dampener Debate
Two Wheeling Tots mentions the Revert’s “lift assist” as an advantage. However, this system is not a lift assist but rather a “lower assist.” Here’s the reality:
- It’s not actually lifting your rack back up; it’s a dampener that helps control the rack’s descent.
- That same piston can fight against you when you need to raise an empty rack, and if (or when) it fails, you’ve lost the mechanism that controls the entire folding action.
VelociRAX was the first to include these pistons precisely because their tall vertical post can be unwieldy. They needed a dampener to make it manageable. But if your design is better balanced, you don’t require a heavy-duty piston to compensate.
ALTA Racks: A Shorter Bar & a Simple Strap
- We made our vertical post shorter to reduce leverage (less force pushing it down means you don’t need a “lift assist”).
- For those who want an extra hand, we have a real lift-assist strap that can help pull the rack back up—simple, replaceable, and not prone to piston failure.
- We design so you can stand between the vehicle and rack while lowering, which is safer than having to reach over the bikes from the back.

2. “Less Feedback” & Rack Movement
Two Wheeling Tots notes the Thule Revert has less feedback to the driver. Let’s clarify the setup they tested:
- They used an Alta Superior 76ER (our 7 bike rack) on an Alta Swinger swing-away bike rack system, which adds an extra pivot point. Naturally, a swing-out system will flex more than a rack bolted directly to the hitch.
- ALTA Racks also come with retractable straps that sync the rack and vehicle together that eliminates movement if you use them correctly, but these weren’t used in this test.
- Even with the swing-out, our system is still lighter than the Thule Revert (or anything VelociRAX offers).
If you’re setting up your Alta Rack with the right straps and adjustments, you’ll get minimal movement—plus the added convenience of a full swing-out feature that Thule doesn’t have. We accept a little extra complexity in exchange for advanced functionality and higher capacity.

3. Tool-Free Mounting: Convenience vs. True Security
Thule’s integrated pin system lets you mount the rack quickly. Sounds great—until you consider single-point-of-failure issues. Military-standard designs (our benchmark) avoid relying solely on a single small rod. Over time, that part can wear out or break, potentially dropping your high-priced bikes onto the highway. Not a risk we’re willing to take.
At ALTA Racks, we:
- Use steel threading and a locking hitch bolt (included on our Superior models).
- Make every part replaceable, ensuring one worn-out piece doesn’t kill your entire rack.
- Believe 30 seconds of installing a secure hitch bolt is worth the peace of mind.
4. Integrated Locks & Hitch Pins: Why We Keep It Modular
Small integrated locks and pins can jam or fail after repeated exposure to road grime, salt, or just plain use. When that happens, you can’t simply replace a single component—on many racks, that’s the end of the entire system.
By contrast, ALTA Racks are built with a federated design:
- Any part can be swapped or upgraded.
- Our racks are backwards-compatible with new designs and accessories.
- We encourage owners to adapt their racks over time, rather than toss them for a new model.
5. Fixed Wheel Cradles vs. Infinite Adjustability
The Thule Revert’s bottom bar cradles might reduce bike sway when loading. Great in theory—except they lock you into one wheel position:
- No adjusting bike height to avoid handlebar or pedal conflicts.
- No sliding for different wheel sizes or to keep the rack profile narrower.
ALTA Racks’ baskets slide on the top rail, and the bottom bar is slotted to accommodate your rear wheel strap wherever you need it. This means you can stagger bikes for better clearance, run fat tires, or carry multiple e-bikes with minimal fuss.

6. Tailgate Clearance & Truck Friendliness
If you drive a truck, you likely want to drop the tailgate without removing or drastically tilting the rack. Here’s the difference:
- Thule Revert often can’t clear the tailgate, even when tilted down. You might scratch or damage your tailgate if you’re not careful.
- ALTA Racks typically clear a tailgate without tilting, thanks to our shorter bar. And if you have our Alta Swinger, you can literally swing the rack to the side with all bikes still loaded—giving you total access to your truck bed.
Those are the real solutions that actual riders asked for. We listened.

ALTA racks bikes racks have the ability to clear tailgate without the need to be lowered.

Thule ReVert can not clear the tailgate even when lowered, creating potential to damage your vehicle.
7. Multi-Sport Functionality
We’re not just about bikes:
- Ski & Snowboard Kits turn your Alta Rack into a winter sports carrier.
- We have rack configurations for kayaks, SUPs, and more in the works.
- Our design DNA is all about adaptability—these are “life racks,” not just “bike racks.”

Swing-out feature: The Alta has a full swing-out option, not available on the ReVert or any other brand, unmatched in weight capacity of 350 pounds. Unmatched in dual direction without having to buy something else. ALTA Racks engineering and product design is at another level. We are Aerospace engineers that got tired being lied to by brands and said enough to accepting sub par products that make these companies super rich and product tons of trash due to the limited life.

Final Thoughts: Built in the USA, Built for a Lifetime
From an aerospace engineering background, I’ve grown tired of mass-produced gear that meets the bare minimum. We build ALTA Racks to exceed your expectations by:
- Offering lifetime warranties on products handmade in Utah.
- Ensuring no single-point-of-failure designs.
- Listening to real-world feedback and updating parts you can retrofit to older models.
We appreciate Two Wheeling Tots for testing our rack and pointing out Thule Revert’s features. But if you look beyond the marketing to the mechanics, design philosophy, and user experience, we believe ALTA Racks continues to lead the pack.
At the end of the day, most companies’ priorities are to provide a low-cost solution that meets minimum standards—and that may work for some, but we serve a different breed. You worked hard for your toys and deserve true protection, thoughtful design, and rock-solid reliability. Check out our products and truly see the difference; read our reviews and you’ll be hooked. This is from me to you—from the builder, thinker, designer, and the person who thinks day and night about this stuff. I love what I do. Keep shredding and keep the rubber side down.
