What type of hitch do I need for an Alta Swinger?

The hitch is the part of the rack that inserts into the vehicle’s receiver and all of our racks come with one. For all Alta Racks, you have three hitch options to choose from: a General hitch, an XL hitch, and a Small hitch. However, when using an Alta Swinger with a rack, we only recommend using a Short hitch. In fact, when ordering a Swinger with your rack, the only hitch that will come with it is a Short hitch.

Buying an Alta Swinger with an Alta Rack

If you only plan on using the Swinger with the rack, there is no need for the original hitch (General or XL) that is included by default for each bike rack. If you purchase the Swinger and rack together (as a Swinger/rack combo), we will include a short hitch in place of the General or XL hitch.

Using an Alta Rack with and without an Alta Swinger

If you also plan on using the rack without the Swinger—such as changing the Swinger out when mounting the rack on different vehicles—you will usually need a General or XL hitch, as the Short hitch with only a rack may obstruct access to the vehicle’s tailgate or rear doors. In this case, we recommend purchasing a separate General or XL hitch alongside a Swinger/rack combo (Swinger, Rack, Short hitch) to give you the additional option of mounting your rack on a vehicle without a Swinger.
