First bike? not sure where to start.

Im looking to getting into techniqual trails and a little bit of downhill. But extremley compromised by a budget of $600. Any suggestions would be great on what brands, size, i stand at 5,8 170lbs

At a budget of $600 you are pretty much locked into hardtails. At your height, most likely you would ride a medium size bike (16" - 17").

If you can bump up your budget a tiny bit:

You could get a new 29er Airborne Guardian hardtail for $599.95 + $100 sh. Airborne Guardian
Or a new 27.5er KHS SIXFIFTY 300 hardtail for $689 HKS SIXFIFTY 300
Or a new 26er HKS Alite 350 for $599 HKS Alite 350
Or a used bike ( I prefer new)...
These are all well built sturdy bikes that are very reasonably priced.
