Generally, there are two schools of thought for chain selection : get a cheap chain and replace it more often, or buy a more expensive one and try to keep it longer. I am in the "I'm getting the one that's on sale or within my leftover budget" camp, which often corresponds to Deore or SLX level chains. With its nicely sculpted outer plates, the SLX M7100 is made for Shimano's new 12 speed group which now allows shifting under load. The Good

-Reasonably priced compared to aftermarket brands -Excellent chain retention -Great durability -No creaking from the interface

The Bad

-Could be available in more teeth count options

Overall Review
When I built up my new bike this past spring, I knew that the drivetrain would be all Shimano. I simply prefer their trouble-free double-bolt crank arm installation, nicely shaped aluminium arms, and I had an HG driver on my hub. Going with the new 12 speed stuff, I chose the XT M8120 crankset for the better looks over the SLX M7120 (the blueish-grey color didn't fit with my bike's colorways), but I picked up the SLX CRM75 chainring as it was cheaper than the XT for pretty much the same quality.
