Ochain Chainring Spider
Vital Review
Overall Review
If you've ever ridden a full-suspension bike without a chain, you likely noticed an improvement in its suspension performance. After watching some incredible chainless downhill runs on the UCI World Cup circuit, this Italian brand dreamt up a way to provide the benefits of riding without a chain, with a chain. On many bikes, chainstay growth during suspension compression causes the crankset to rotate counter-clockwise. This is also known as pedal kickback. By allowing some spring-loaded rotational movement within a reimagined chainring spider, the Ochain device is claimed to automatically...

Miranda XMOD MTB Carbon Crankset
Vital Review
Overall Review
When Miranda set out to make the XMOD MTB carbon crankset, they wanted them to be lightweight, durable, and compatible with multiple mountain bike disciplines. With over six months of testing on our end, we feel we’ve come to a verdict on how well they did in covering these objectives. Strengths Weaknesses Modular design where the crank arms, spindles, and spider/chainring are completely interchangeable Very lightweight Titanium spindle for size and weight Spectacular chain retention Great looking gloss finish Quick chainring/spider changes The chain may grind with less-than-perfect chain...

SRAM X01 Eagle Rear Derailleur
The Good

Range for days, Looks the part

The Bad

Weak non-adjustable clutch can't control chain slap, numerous jams and blown jockey wheels/mech cages, sensitive B-tension. Chainring is soft as cheese. Stupidly expensive and the mech hangs down a long way.

Overall Review
I ran X01 Eagle on my bike for three months over summer. Riding a few times each week and racing 4 one-day enduros and one 6-day trans event. I had numerous problems with Eagle. Not so much in terms of shifting. It moves up and down through the the block quickly and consistently. (Though it's very important that you have and use the red plastic B-tension adjustment tool, as its B-tension quite sensitive and continually goes out of adjustment). The major problem that I found is that Eagle has too weak a clutch to control chain slap and provide effective chain retention. I also found that this...

Race Face Next R Crankset
Vital Review
Overall Review
Race Face has over the past couple of years been busy expanding their lineup of cranks to the point where they have an option available for any riding style and any budget. However, that is not to say that there isn’t room for something more – and for 2017, that something is the R family of components. In case you wonder what the R stands for, it’s rally. And rally, as we all know, translates to riding your bike. Slotting into the range in between the ultra-light Next and the DH-rated SixC product families, the Next R carbon cranks aim to combine the best of two worlds in a package that should...
