I have just switched over to Shimano XTR trail pedals after having been on Crank Brothers Mallets and Mallets E s for the last 8 years or so.
The Good: Light, A very Definitive Clip-in Feel, They are Durable, Easy to enter and exit, adjustable clip in tension, Price, Longevity, Set it and Forget it. I never accidentally come un-clipped like I used to with Crank Bros. The cleats are steel and last much longer than the Crank Bros Cleats. I have not had to do ANY maintenance on them. They seem to last forever.
The Bad: High Price, they have Less Float and less mud/ice shedding ability than Crank Brothers, No replaceable pins, Platform not as good as Mallet or Mallet E when un-clipped.
The pedal function and performance is best in class. Very nice and thoughtful design that just works all the time.
The increased contact surface is really tangible, I exeperiece way less foot numbness if any despite I use it on a road bike which is more of a static load on the body and on the feet.
My only complaint is the seals on the spindle that never stays in it's place. For a pedal that cost this much and being a flagship model of Shimano this is not acceptable!

I've had these pedals for years and on multiple bikes and used them for everything from XC to DH shuttle laps to everyday trail riding on a Giant Reign and now a Santa Cruz Hightower. I am not the hardest charger, but I am also not the lightest rider at 270lbs with a high score of almost 30lbs more 2 seasons ago. These pedals just keep putting up with everything and just brush off the poor line choice rock strikes. I am sure the XT pedals are just as good, but when the opportunity arises to get some XTR bling why not take it?
