Yes, that's a 9-tooth sprocket on the end of this hub. Canfield is looking to shrink cassette size, which will allow you to use smaller front chainrings. You'll save weight and get more clearance over the current systems. This hub is projected to be available in nearly every popular axle diameter and width.

That is a great idea for Road hubs as well to bring a compact crankset a better sprint gear.

this is a great idea overall, and just wait, the XC guys who fantisize over saving 15grams will figure out how to integrate it too, which will be good for everyone. I don't know how many times I've smacked my DH and AM bikes chainrings. I like I like I like

I know this 9t concept has some strong DH focused benefits but conceivably if the cassette was a 9-32 or even a 10-34 you could have an exceptional all mountain application as well. 10-34 with a 26t chainring wold be sweet.
