Press Release

First iXS European Downhill Cup as Hors Category

This year’s iXS European Downhill Cup season opens in the Swiss Rivera at Monte Tamaro. The kick off the European Series will be celebrated, especially as the downhill race is the first one to be run in the Hors category.

The race at Monte Tamaro was already part of last year’s iXS European Downhill Cup, with 300 riders from 16 nations participating, among them names like Brook MacDonald (AUS - MS Evil), Lorenzo Suding (ITA - Pila Black Arrows), Marcus Pekoll (AUT - MS Evil) and Emilie Siegenthaler (SUI - Scott 11). Getting a spot on the podium has proven to be hard work as the course is one of the longest in the series with a stiff competition. 2012 proves to be no less demanding! The course has again been improved in autumn by Claudio Caluori, with the start of the race being at the middle station now. A length of 2,200 metres and 640 metres vertical drop make it a challenging course.

The biggest news is that that the cup is only open to licensed riders and the introduction of a Top 80 Men and Top 10 Woman training. With introducing the Hors category in the elite class men for the Monte Tamaro race the organizers try to attract more world class riders. As a result riders will be able to collect points up to rank 25, with the winner getting 90 points. Overall 6,915 Euros of prize money will be paid out in this category. All other races of the European Cup will be delivered as UCI category C1, with riders able to collect points up to rank 15. An additional 7,000 Euros will be paid out for the overall winners in the end.

The organisers will keep the principle that riders can cross off unsuccessful seeding and final runs in order to keep a good overall result in case of technical defects or crashes. Riders can cross off different races, with six seeding runs and six final runs captured for the overall result.

The organizers will continue the successful media campaign of recent seasons, with features on Servus TV, Red Bull’s own broadcasting station. This collaboration with Media House will be continued with the cup being broadcast on www.redbull.com to use synergy effects. Both features and side stories will be accompanying the races. Each Friday before races in the European Cup there is a commented GoPro course check planned for which the riders of Scott 11 could be recruited, so there will be a few on-board rides with British rider Brendan Fairclough.
