Rachel on her way to her second World Champ title in South Africa 2013 - photo by Sven Martin

Press Release:

Four World Cup Series wins in 2013 made Rachel the most awarded British Mountain biker in the history of the sport with 19 World Cup wins to her name.  Her resounding victory at the World Championships in South Africa this September was her second World Champs win but she’s had a lot to overcome since her last victory in 2008

Getting hit by a truck wrote off the whole of 2009, recurring shoulder dislocations, broken wrists and cracked ribs could only slow her down temporarily, she took the UCI World Cup Series overall in 2012 and nothing and nobody was going to wrest that trophy from her in 2013!

Talking to BT Sport recently about her success Rachel said:

“It feels even better this time. When you’re young you don’t understand success in the same way, as if it happens by accident. It’s the hard times and injuries that make you appreciate what it really means to win."

Rachel’s global domination has done a lot to raise the profile of our sport in 2013 and we’re stoked at the number of young girls (and a couple of older ladies!) who’ve told us that Rachel has inspired them to give it a try. If you visit the BT Sport voting gallery at:http://sport.bt.com/womeninsport/vote-for-your-bt-action-woman-of-the-year-S11383687204991 you’ll see that Rachel is in great company with some fantastic female athletes also nominated – but if you’re looking for an Action Woman, Ms Atherton’s got to be hard to beat! Voting’s unlimited until January 19th.
