XC Eliminator Eliminated? 15

Still wet behind the ears, XCE in Novo Mestre - photo by Marius Maaseward.

Following a meeting by the mountain bike commission of the UCI last week, it would appear as though they are on the verge of submitting a suggestion to drop Cross Country Eliminator as a UCI sanctioned event. The reasons would appear to be financial, with the committee stating that at present, the discipline merely represents an extra day of timekeeping and other expenses, with no foreseeable way for the UCI to actually generate revenues from it. The commission seems to believe that the discipline will survive however, in the same way as 4-cross has been able to: outside the UCI. They would still welcome XCE events at the World Cups, but it would be up to each event organizer to fund and manage it. Apparently, the UCI does still wish to continue to crown a World Champion in the discipline, much like it still does for 4-cross.

The recommendation comes with renewed commitmentย to Olympic XC and Downhill, which in the overall scheme of things would seem like a good direction to us. Whilst some may bemoan the loss of 4-cross support from the UCI, we doubt many tears will be shed over XCE, an event which has clearly struggled to define itself properly.

The decision is to be taken in about 3 weeks' time, we'll keep you informed as to the outcome at that time. The UCI will no doubt be hoping to announce a title sponsor for mountain biking for next year at that time as well...

What do you think of the recommendation? Weigh in below!
