Schedule Changes and News for 2014 UCI World Cup 8

Pietermaritzburg local and DH track designer, Nigel Hicks sent over the following schedule changes for the 2014 UCI World Cup.

  • The UCI have altered the date of the first event in Pietermaritzburg from the 5th, 6th April to the 10-13th April.
  • Big changes for 2014 are that the UCI has taken media advice and during triple event weekends has moved the Downhill from Sunday to Saturday. XCO will now run on Sunday as the final event.
  • XCE has been dropped from the South African round due to a change in event timing as the UCI looks to standardize viewing times for the media. XCE will now take place in the evenings (around 7pm) on Fridays at European events, under floodlights if necessary.

UCI takes a few more steps to show the mtb community they don't give a rip about us. And as far as venues go, take a moment and check out the requirements for submitting a bid. It's over 100,000 US dollars upfront to UCI and that doesn't even consider all the infrastructure and media and other expenses the venue must cover.

From what i understand talking to the boss man who is in touch with the UCI here in SA, is that the Teams and UCI are in a quandary. The riders and spectators want more rounds, which is all good and well, but the teams cant afford the travel. Already with 2 events in the southern hemisphere this year its putting a big strain on the teams ... some of whom seem to want it based more in Europe again, but then how can you call it a "World Cup" .. .it may as well be like the IXS.

Then the biggest issue is the fact that the venues themselves cannot afford to host the events so no venues bid when the bidding process begins ... so places like Champery and Schladming dont feature as they dont even bid for the event. Its not that the UCI excludes them .. its that if they dont bid, they cant get an event. As far as i know Andorra have taken a year off as they are preparing for worlds in 2015 ... which is a fair call ...
So as much as we want more events, if the cash is not there from the venues .. we are snookered ...

Not sure why the UCI changed the dates though .. thats beyond me ...
But the DH Finals on the Saturday means we can have the "Afterparty Saturday night ... and have Sunday to recover from our hangovers while watching the XC which is cool

Screw sea otter! The big problem I see is that same old UCI bullshit, no race from april to june. Can't find a venue in May, not anywhere??? Maybe have 8-9 DH rounds???? Thats too much work I guess. The last 5 races should be awesome and finally back at Windham, the best in the biz.

I think cost is the biggest issue with expanding to 8-9 rounds. Its not cheap for even the biggest teams to run a full WC schedule. Many teams, besides the real big guys often struggle just to do 6-7 rounds.

So we are going to get DH finals on Saturdays at some stops? That will be odd at first.
