FINAL RESULTS - Snowshoe #2 World Cup Downhill 7

The last race of the season is in the books!

It wasn't easy, but the UCI pulled it off - we ended up with a 6-race World Cup and even though they had to resort to a double-header at the last event (again) to wrap things up, it still feels like a complete season. And what a way to wrap things up, coming into the fast and rough Snowshoe track with 3 of the 4 individual titles still on the line. With talk of rain in the forecast, all eyes were on the sky - but the juniors set off in sunny conditions and the weather would not be factor throughout the day. Izabela Yankova took her third race win in a row to secure the overall title, while Jordan Williams pulled off the Snowshoe double ahead of Jackson Goldstone who had already secured the overall title - giving him the World Champs/World Cup Overall combo for his first year as a junior.

As the women took to the track, we were in for high drama. First of all, we extend our thoughts and well wishes to Jess Blewitt who had a nasty crash on a rhythm section jump and had to be evacuated. At the time of this writing, we do not know more about her condition. The race was red-flagged for about 20 minutes, before the fight for the 2021 overall title could resume. Rolling in 4th from last, Vali Hรถll laid down an attacking run that looked closer to her form at the start of the season, riding free but not falling victim to weird crashes in strange places. She took the lead comfortably at the line, but was challenged by Marine Cabirou who came within 0.2 seconds of spoiling Vali's shot at another win. As Myriam Nicole set off, the title was hers to lose, and she looked in complete control through the most difficult sections of the track, slightly off Vali's pace but just where she needed to be to secure the overall title. As fate would have it, she made a mistake just at the exit of the flat pedaling section towards the end of the track, and we could only watch in disbelief as she lost the front and went down. She got up about as quickly as she could, but to no avail - she crossed the line in 7th place and opened the door for Vali Hรถll to claim the race win and the overall World Cup title in her first elite season.

Elite Men Race Notes

  • Tuhuto-Ariki Pene with an extended early hot seat stay.
  • Brook Macdonald gave the ground another good pounding like only he knows how to do. Early reports suggest the ground may have dislocated a few boulders, but itโ€™s still hanging in there. Brook got up and finished his run in style of course.
  • Dante Silva takes over the hot seat! #USDH
  • Danny Hart on track, after a flat in qualifying. Hart looking pinned and up by 1.7 after the rock garden, Silva's run was quality but Danny is another level up.
  • Angel Suarez up on the clock despite dropping 1 second in the key rock garden section! 1.3 in the green at the line, on pace with the fastest qualifying time!
  • Bernard Kerr not far off the splits before head-butting a big rock. The rock looked OK and would go on to finish the rest of the race in one piece.
  • Dak Norton on a charge, flat tire after an aggressive run that was in touch through 3 splits. A few out of control moments and messy lines might be to blame, but Dak will be back. #USDH
  • Greenland on track, and the first real test of Angel's time. In touch at the top splits, when a few wild moments saw the run get away from him. Spectacular, but bleeding time all the way down.
  • Thomas Estaque scrubbing through the top rhythm sections, what a display of style and on the pace through 2 splits! Wild through the top rock section, and dropping some serious time in the key section of the track, not to be for the Frenchman today.
  • Reece Wilson! On fire, looking every bit the winner from Wednesday, on a flyer and well ahead at the splits before dropping his chain just before the pedaling section! Coasting home only 1.4 back in 3rd, an incredible run that would sadly not bear its fruit.
  • Amaury on a charge! Green through several splits before crossing the line just 0.144 back! Amaury is "just happy to be back" after sitting at home for 8 weeks, but he is dangerously close to full race pace already. Look out 2022.
  • Thirion green at the third split! A master though the tech, Remi attacked with trademark abandon, but a mistake in the rocks would drop him down a bit at the line. Still every bit as exciting as ever to watch.
  • Luca Shaw, top #USDH hopeful riding with a fractured bone in his wrist, down at the top splits but ahead though the rocks! Incredible, how does he hold onto the bars here? So smooth, so efficient with his lines. Ultimately he couldn't match Angel's bottom section, and would cross the line in 3rd.
  • Matt Walker in touch, but a front flat put paid to his efforts.
  • Loris on track! 1.9 back at the 2nd split, not on pace for Loris. Pushing hard through the rocks, off the track! And again a bit further down! The errors stacked up, and Loris couldn't put down the run he wanted. 51st position at the line, Loris is out of the overall title race.
  • Brosnan green at the third split! Many have tried, but so far nobody has managed to touch Angel's last section - can Troy do it? Yes! 0.21 up and into the lead!!! Angel so close to winning his first ever World Cup, denied by Troy who put all his race craft into his run.
  • Finn Iles on pace, fully charging, shoulder tackles a tree and that's his bid at glory gone.
  • Loic at the line! He needs 5th or better to take the overall...if anybody can manage the pressure, it's Super Bruni. 0.8 up at the 2nd split!!! He's not playing for 5th, he's playing for the win! Trademark Bruni speeeeeed, smooth and in control. Floating though the tech, 1.5 up now!!!! It's incredible! How are we seeing what we are seeing??? 0.4 UP AT THE LINE!!!! HE WINS IN SNOESHOW AGAIN!!!!! If you want to know what perfection looks like, that was it! Super Bruni did it again. As Eliot said..."he's one of the best...ever..."...it's all starting to add up, isn't it?
  • Another shout-out to Mick Hannah who raced his last World Cup here. We were as emotional as Mick during his post-race interview!
