Muck, moisture and mad speed in Ft. Bill.
Qualifying for the second round of the 2022 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup season has concluded in Fort William, Scotland. Unpredictable wet, windy weather made the long, unrelenting track in the Scottish highlands a challenge for the best mountain bike racers in the world. During Friday's training session, Loic Bruni suffered a collarbone break and is out for this weekend's race. Rachel Atherton made a smile-filled return to the downhill track for practice yesterday, but did not start today. We hope to see her going against the women and the clock soon. Tahnee Seagrave, Charlie Harrison and Kaos Seagrave among others, listed as DNS today.
Laurie Greenland found something none of the other Elite Men had taking qualifying by over 2 seconds with a 4:37.9. Charlie Hatton had his best quali result in 2nd with a 4:40.254 and Greg Minnaar needing to stretch just a little bit more in 3rd with a 4:40.450. From there, the rest of the Top Ten were separated by just two seconds. Camille Balanche earned the fastest time in Elite Women by 1.7 seconds over Vali Holl in 2nd with Myriam Nicole in 3rd. Jackson Goldstone and Jordan Williams were only separated by .6 seconds battling in the Junior Men's class, and in Junior Women's seeding, Phoebe Gale was in a league of her own some 13 seconds ahead.
Some heavy names in Elite Men didn't make the cut today including Aaron Gwin and Brook Macdonald. Neko Mulally was also outside of the top 60 along with a big list of DNF postings. #USDH results include Luca Shaw in 9th, Dakotah Norton in 23rd, Dante Silva in 27th and Austin Dooley 51st!

Gwin flatted in qualies at Windrock and now at a World Cup. Common denominator is tires.
But as @piggy points out, Neko & Blenki (Maxxis) and Bulldog (Michelin) flatted in qualifying too.
Being protected is of exponential value for racers at the start of a season. I would love to make an argument that the 5 time overall winner should be protected already, but it would be a really hard argument to win. Just absolutely sucks.

I don't really think so. Just think that the uniqueness of Ft. Bill combined with the absence of several heavy hitters that would fill the top 60 out is the big factor.
Hannah stepping down was always top 60. Bruno, Finn, Gwin, Brosnan, Blenki, Bulldog, Brendog, Neko (now that his hand is getting slightly better) are all top 60 regulars.
That's 8 slots to fill and I'm sure I'm missing someone.
Not to mention, Cathro being back is automatically into top 40 (used to finish top 10).
Only real big swing I saw was Hatton qualifying 2nd. But he looked cooked from that effort come finals, whether it was exhaustion from the qualies or nerves day of

That's what happens when you can just focus on racing DH!
Connor has been fast this whole time, but having to do EWS didn't help the DH racing. This year will be good for him, and just wait until he has a proper frame to ride.....

Being a crap single pivot Kona was the big hurdle. It sucks that he's stuck on that short travel rig when you can tell his racing form is up. He should just spray paint a freaking 4 bar bike with Forbidden stickers and post a legit result for once.
He's always posted better results with lesser equipment
