Aheavy-weight battle is on our hands at the Enduro World Series in Lo Barnechea, Chile. Day one of the two-day race featured three demanding stages which included the longest stage in EWS history, Stage 2. The stage covered more than 11 kilometers and dropped 1800m. Over 300 riders competed in the Pro Men's class and there was a solid contingent of regular pinners and some new names in the mix when the dust settled.
The big story is the incredibly close racing between Sam Hill, 2017 EWS overall winner, and Richie Rude, two-time EWS overall winner on stages 1 and 3. Rude won both stages but by the slimmest of margins. Issues with Rude on Stage 2, resulting in a 194th place finish on the stage, has Rude sitting back in 127th in the overall. Adrien Dailly continues with a blistering pace in 2nd place, backing up his solid 2017 season performance. Martin Maes, aboard a new GT rounds out 3rd. A crop of up-and-comers fill in 4th, 5th and 6th (hell yeah, Neer!) with Jared Graves having a solid opening day in 7th.
Cecile Ravanel, while not focusing full-time on enduro in 2018, has swept all three stages. Isabeau Courdurier and Katy Winton are in the hunt, but back a bit in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The women's class tightens up considerably after 3rd place which should make for an exciting conclusion on Sunday.
Stay tuned for the race action slideshow from Sven Martin and continued racing tomorrow as they wrap up the race with three more stages.
