The Swiss mountainside of Lenzerheide delivered a dramatic dose of downhill racing today at the fifth round of the 2017 UCI World Cup. A loose, rough course was made somewhat more predictable thanks to overnight rain and race day conditions were prime for the fastest mountain bike racers on the planet.

The Elite Men's competition continues to soldier on with intense battles between the top riders. If we thought the .22-second victory at Andorra was close between Greg Minnaar and Troy Brosnan, we were treated to a results swap by only .16 seconds in Lenzerheide. Greg Minnaar takes his 75th podium and 21st World Cup DH win with an aggressive and flawless run. Troy Brosnan, who had an equally impressive run, just missed back-to-back victories behind Greg only .16 seconds off the win. Troy's conservative rock garden line choice could have been the decider. Danny Hart blitzed the track with his trademark, wild style for 3rd with team mate, Laurie Greenland following in 4th. Phil Atwill, the lanky, stylish Brit, lands on his first World Cup podium with a fantastic result.

The story of the race is of Aaron Gwin, fastest qualifer. The last man down the mountain laid it all out. He was 1.5 seconds ahead of the winning pace at the last split until he ripped the tire off his rim, squashing his podium dreams. Greg Minnaar acknowledged Gwin's performance in his post-race interview, but that's racing. What a finals!

Interesting news hovered around Neko Mulally's DNS due to a rule infringement. Swiss rules require racers to use back protection. Neko had a piece of cardboard pinned to the inside of his jersey (a technique often used by racers in the past without consequence). The officials deemed the protection unacceptable at the start hut and Neko was not allowed to compete.

Myriam Nicole takes back-to-back World Cup wins in the Elite Women's class, taking the win by holding it together through the final split. 2nd place, Rachel Atherton, returning from injury was ahead through all but the last split and finished half a second off the top pace. Emilie Siegenthaler put together a great run earning bronze.

Finn Iles, despite a horrible crash before qualifying yesterday, took a convincing win once again in the Junior Men's class. Great Britain's Joe Breeden posted up a significant result in 2nd followed by fastest qualifier, Sylvain Cougoureaux in 3rd.
