Leogang World Cup Update - No Timed Training, Hill and Minnaar with Possible Knee Injuries 18

Friday, September 20, 2013, 12:20pm PST

We were expecting a Timed Training results list today from Leogang, but officials did not hold the timed session. Here is a report from the ground in Leogang. We will keep you updated as we have more news and stay tuned for the action-packed slideshow this evening!

Despite knowing the number of entries over a week in advance, the UCI did not realize that they would not have enough scheduled practice time to hold an official timed training session with all the riders, using 15-second gaps. The UCI changed policies and ideas throughout the year and this is not their first mistake. If they stuck to timed training for Top 80 men and Top 20 women, as normal, there would be no problem. With the tightest race of the year upon us, riders have no idea how they stack up before all-important qualifying.

This is not official, but it also looks like Sam Hill and Greg Minnaar may have season-ending knee injuries. If the news is true, it is possible we could see Danny Hart jump from 5th overall to 3rd and Blenki to 4th or 5th depending on their finishes on Sunday.

Track notes: Riders have enjoyed practice, despite the obvious bike park complaints. Conditions have made the riding fun, but tricky, which competitors seem to love.

Course maintenance crews were out with chainsaws DURING practice, cutting tree limbs for broadcast angles. Some chainsaws were seen within a foot of the active course. George Brannigan almost lost a limb. We were pretty freaked out and also confused as practice was concluding in a matter of minutes. We don't know why they could not wait. - Sven Martin
