Florida has never been known for it's mountain biking but things are changing. Florida trail groups, bike shops and even towns are starting to invest in their infrastructure and then promoting the events to out of state travelers.

The largest organization for these types of events is They put on MTB events and races all over the sunshine state but especially in the popular winter months. While the northern half of the country is buried under snow, riders in Florida are enjoying 60 degree weather and endless miles of singletrack.

The latest event is in the sea side city of Venice. Piggy's Revenge is an endurance race put on by SCORR (Sarasota County Off Road Riders). At Piggy's you can pick your poison with a 20, 40 or 60 mile route through the T.Mabry Carlton Reserve. This is the park where SCORR members have been building twisty singletrack and creating a mountain biking boom in a place where only a few years ago barely a dozen people had "Real" mountain bikes. Now a weekly group ride boasts 30 to 40 participants.

I wrote this just to let people know that while FL is not usually on rider's radar, you all are welcome to escape the harsh winter, rent a bike and have some fun. The 3rd annual Piggy's Revenge race takes place this coming weekend on Jan 12th, 2014 and as of this writing, most of the competitors are coming from out of state. It should be a great time. Come Join us.
