Yeah, this is indeed a mountain bike site but some of you are racers who train hard in the off season, and some of you are not the narrow minded types who would be aghast at the fact that other kinds of bikes do indeed exist and may, in fact, be worth the time to ride and enjoy.

So with that in mind, Shimano is doing an "affordable" version of their electric shifting goodness in the Ultegra level and it's going to get a lot of attention due to being up on Engadget today:

Pretty cool.

The best bit of this technology is the recent PXP bike and shifting with your mind!

Just imagine coming out of a tight corner and thinking the number of the gear you want to be in and BOOM your bike shifts to that gear. Or even better yet, the video says with the aid of the iPhone you can set the program to go to a specific gear for a set a GPS coordinates. Having all the shifting preprogrammed based on your practice runs.

The possibilities are amazing.

Mavic did this years ago when I worked in a road shop, but they had a lot of problems. Now that I think about it, I want to say that the Mavics were wireless and the problems were with spotty transmission. I assume that Shimano will have worked out the bugs before releasing them.

I hated working on that Mavic electronic shifting mess. I can only assume that relying on wires will have cleared 99% of the problems for Shimano. It's a sweet concept and even if I just like my trusty old steel cables for the rest of my life, it's still nice to see some stuff coming out that's different.
