So I converted my 29er to a 6fattie.. Why? Because change is a constant in this industry and I have been doing the "bike thing" for over 12 years and get excited to try new things. First impression was that if feels like a heavy 29er with insane traction. I find I can carry more speed into corners and brake later thanks to the giant tire, feels ALOT more stable on blown out downhill trails (loose, holes, rocks get eaten up). On day 1 I ran no chainguide and the chain would get sucked into the wheel by the tire, I threw on a chai guide and it solved that problem, the rear tire DOES rub but switching from a 3.0 tire to a 2.8 will solve this, fork doesn't rub unless I run a fender. I'm a Santa Cruz local from Felton and I ride UCSC laps Monday through Friday, didn't have a single issue on yesterday's ride, overall I'm pleased with the conversion but the rotational weight is noticed obviously.

that's rad. did all measurements/geo basically stay the same? if you run 2.8's are they a little smaller diameter?

we've got a vid w/ ropelato on his 6fattie dropping this week. he mobs it.

Specialized need to make 2.8" and 3.0" Grid casing Butchers. Weight be damned!

That's a lot of squish with even more squish! Do you think it would feel better with less travel?

It looks great,no doubt and would be a hell of a lot of fun.To hell with weight issues unless you are a serious contender in races.
But I would have to ask you why you put a 3 " on the back,when the general consensus is always to put a smaller width on the rear ?
That's ok if you run 2.35's or 2.4's because you know you will get good clearance either way.
Now you are left with unecessary rub marks on your frame.
Don't take that the wrong way,but check before you commit.
Love the bike though

It feels slightly slower but I haven't done any measurements. Tire only rubs when I send it. I hope maxxis makes some fatty tires for it, rear tire already has some punctures in the side wall after two rides

Specialized only makes a 3.0 for now in the purgatory, I'm going to look into wtb for a smaller rear tire

This is my main concern with these mid fat bikes, is it an issue when cornering hard?

Vittoria tyres are of a slimmer profile if you want to have a look at them.
Jafaki are a great tyre.
2.5 though,would you run it that "slim"

Dang. My dad has an Enduro 29 Comp and I might just look into doing this.
I would definitely have to go 1x10 because the current 2x10 doesn't even leave clearance for 2.35 Schwalbes.
Just to clarify, you're running 2.8 in the rear and a 3.0 up front?

I've been thinking about doing the same with my Enduro 29. Is it significantly heavier? Did you spring for the Traverse Carbon wheels, or aluminum? Tubes or Tubeless? I'd like to hear what your impressions are on other tires, I'd like a smaller tread (even like a Renegade) but keep a tough casing...

I switched to a Fox 36 looks like it might have less clearance then a pike for a 3.0 tire. Anyone try this conversion with a fox instead of pike?

I just went to Santa Cruz for the first time and I love your local trails around UCSC.
I have been thinking of doing this on my Enduro 29er as I live in a Yucca Valley, Ca where the trails are very sandy. Actually there are no MTB trails, I just ride the dirt bike trails. I figured having a bigger foot print will make the trails just a bit more enjoyable. A fat bike is out of the question. I will get a dirt bike before I do that. Do you think its worth the investment to ride sandy trail conditions?

How do you like the ohlins??

I'm running tubeless 3.0 tires front/rear and carbon roval traverse fatty wheels. Really disappointed with the control casing by the way, just isn't holding up on the rough stuff... Worth the money??? I'm not sure, my old setup worked just fine but the extra traction is amazing. And yes it feels much heavier. And do answer the ohlins question... It Feels much more dh oriented, and no climb switch is rough at first but I don't really miss it

I like how he switches to the DH helmet when the terrain is all open and grassy and he's not even going as fast, just air time. But when he's in tight, twisty trails with trees all around waiting to smack into, AND absolutely FLYING! no DH helment then... Smile
