Updating me KTM Lycan to 1x10 using the OneUp Components 40T sprocket and RAD cage. What front chainring size do you all think would work best?

90% of my riding is in Texas, where we have a vast amount of flat. We can get fun, quick elevation changes, but not a ton. I make a few trips, when I can, to elevation, but not enough to run lower in the front in hopes of riding in New Mexico or Colorado more.

I was thinking a 34T would be goo,d but didn't know if a 36T would make more sense.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

34 is probably fine for Texas... if you need lower gear for trips to elevation you can always buy a 30t later.

I run a 34t with a 36-11 cassette in Colorado, but I end up swapping to a 30t for long/high elevation rides.

Fellow Texas rider here. I run a 34t on a rocky mountain thunderbolt and works great for the trails around here but i dont have a 40T sproket and run a standard 11-36T rear end.

34 or 36 seem good for 27.5 while a 28-32 are good for 29.

Ran a 36 with 11-36 in San Jose riding big climbs in santa cruz. A lot of times I would look down and still not be in granny gear. If you are in Texas, dont hesitate, buy the 36t

for longe time I used a 30 with a 42 cog on the cassette, it was perfect for my old spicy 916 with 26 wheels, the same configuration on my new Norco range killer b2 it too hard for my legs and actually I return to a double crankset 34/22 and 11/36 cassette and for me in Liguria, Italy, it's the best.

Woody I think you are headed the right way. 34T on 27.5 would make sense. I'm running a 32T on a 29er and it's fine. Also if you're really worried buy a cheap ring to try or ask your riding buddies to try a ring for a week. Most riders have enough parts taken off their assorted bikes to build two or more additional bikessmile Good Luck - Post a pic of your rig. Would like to see it.

im in austin 34/32 is pretty typical around here, but from what i understand we've got more hills than you in Dallas.

Thanx for the reply's. I have a 34T on order. I'll post up a pic when it's installed.

Adding the OneUp sprocket was pretty simple> I had the cassette where I had to cut the pics, was nerve racking but worked just like the OneUp site said it would. Swapped out the 15T for the 16T.

RAD Cage looks pimp next to the green ring on the cassette.

Well, isn't that a kick in the junk. Apparently the KTM Lycan 274 comes with OEM Shimano Deore that have a 96bcd. Everything I read led me to believe it would be a 104bcd. SUCKAGE...

That sucks!
My trance SX came with the ZEE crank set and the RF NW 34 I put on was a no brainer. Its a pretty affordable set and has taken a beating this last year.
As noted I went with 34 and I live in San Antonio. Probably ride a few of the same trails. I seldom run our of gear. At full tilt (around 25 mph) I can outspin the bike but how many downhills do we have around here that can sustain that speed? Not many.
I also bought a 36 and figure I will swap it out when I travel to the parks next spring.
