The journey of today's Inside Line guest is inspiring. Joe Graney just happens to be CEO of Santa Cruz Bicycles, but he never had the goal of being the man in charge of such a highly influential bike brand. The Bostonian followed his passion for riding bikes, tinkering with bikes, machining and engineering. Mix in a little RV life and low and behold, after designing some of mountain biking's most popular rigs, he's running the show at Santa Cruz. Not surprising, however, he's as down to earth as the first time I met him, some 7 or 8 years ago. I enjoyed getting to know more of Joe's story, hearing about the struggles and success of Santa Cruz, discussing the Syndicate and what the future holds for MTB. I hope you enjoy the interview.

i have never known what to think about this guy. He always came across as a bit callous to me, but damn much respect. love his live and let live attitude

I've always appreciate Joe's no BS approach. I haven't been that hip on SC's stuff for sometime though, despite having been a big fan and owning five of their bikes over the years. I preferred their former small company ethos that did wild stuff and lead the charge whilst adding tons of value. Other companies have since taken up that mantle and while SC bikes are still high quality they are more followers and more conservative now than they were in the past.

I gotta admit, i worked for a shop that was a top 10 santa cruz dealer globally, and they are definitely a company that gets it. They understand warranty, and do whatever it takes to make their customers happy. Their design decisions were always super tight too. threaded bbs, and internal routing that doesn't suck, its shocking that other companies still don't "get it" as it were. They always make a hot looking bike.

If only i could jive with VPP... but that's a different story altogether.
