Convict Lake - Sierra Nevada Mountains
The ASRc is a Cross-Country machine, but that doesn't mean it's a "cross-country first" bike. The modified single pivot climbs extremely well and it's low weight makes it a contender with even the lightest production hardtails. With the addition of the XLoc Full Sprint, it blows everything I've ridden out of the water when it comes to XC racing.

This badge indicates more than just a manufacturer. Having the Yeti badge on your head tube means your bike was conceptualized, tested, refined and built by riders like you and me. I've never ridden a bike more fun and capable than this ASRc. It's redefining what an XC bike can do, all the while making it impossible to wipe the smile off my face.
Every Yeti has this slogan emblazoned on the top tube. It defines their engineering ethos, and it makes an incredible bike. Hand built, race bred.
I'm 5'11" with a 33" inseam and I went with a size medium. I'm right on the line between a medium and a large, but I always prefer a smaller size of possible. If you're my height or slightly below it, I couldn't recommend this size more.
Did I mention Yeti's are built in Golden, Colorado?
The rear triangle on this frame is one piece with no hinges. This means it is a very torsion ally stiff structure, meaning your bike will be predictable, stable and snappy in rough terrain or when going through fast corners.
While the frame is very stiff laterally, it is designed to flex vertically ever so slightly in order to complement the progressive suspension travel of Yeti's modified single pivot. What all that means is that when you go brought the rear suspension's travel, the suspension is smooth, consistently progressive, supportive, and never gives you a harsh bottoming out feeling.
The Rockshox RS-1 was one of the first mods I did to this bike, and it wasn't because the Fox 32 wasn't good enough. I simply love the more supportive feel of Rockshox for XC and Trail riding. But to be honest, I never knew how good a fork could be until I rode this one.
The fork is upside down compared to other MTB forks. The benefit of this is that gravity can make sure the oil in the damping system of the fork is already in place instead of needing to be forced into the valving every time you hit a bump. It's a small detail that makes a huge difference.
This fork makes it feel like the front wheel is glued to the ground. It gives you so much feel and traction that you'd swear your worn out tires are brand new.
The upper portion of this fork is 100% carbon fiber. It's light, but more importantly extremely strong. The fork's chassis is so stiff that any movement is channeled through the suspension's damping system rather than being lost through flex.
To lock out the front shock when I'm going up smooth sections of trail, all I have to do is press this plunger on the XLoc Full Sprint. Same thing unlocks it once things get rowdy. Best part? The same press of a plunger locks out the rear shock too.
The Rockshox Monarch XX is an incredibly supportive shock that feels plush all the way through its stroke. It's supportive enough to pedal through everything, even on smooth roads with wide open valving, and a press of that XLoc Full Sprint plunger locks it out if you really need a form ride.
I went for SRAM's X01 drivetrain on this bike to get the range I needed without having to worry about front shifting or a dropped chain. It's light, good looking and bullet proof.
The rear derailleur makes sure I don't drop chains with its clutch system. This just means the derailleur doesn't slap forward when I hit bumps, so my chain never hits my frame or wiggles off. It makes the bike dependable and silent.
This Absoluteblack oval chainring has a narrow-wide profile to help with chain retention and has 32 teeth. Oval chainrings have long been marketed with snake oil sales tactics about improving physiological efficiency, but I don't buy it. However, I do believe that Absoluteblack's unique oval shape for each tooth count smooths out the torque delivery to the rear wheel, improving traction and reducing pedal bob.
Every bike I own has to have a power meter. It's the best way to objectively measure your output instead of subjective measures of effort like heart rate. This new Stages carbon power meter is gorgeous and bolts right on.
This power meter sends out data in two different languages, ANT+ or Bluetooth, meaning it pairs with my Garmin or my iPhone when using TrainerRoad.
I made the switch from Crankbrothers pedals to SPD style pedals once I discovered XPEDO's MForce8 TI pedals. They are all titanium, extremely light, easy to get in and out of, but most importantly have a much more supportive feel. No vagueness, and their adjustable.
DT Swiss hubs are my favorite for a number of reasons. Light, strong and easy to maintain. Pro tip: get the 32t or 54t star ratchets for these hubs to get more points of engagement.
The wheels, although without stickers here, are ENVE's new M50s. They are made in Ogden, Utah with incredible attention to detail. They are as light as road wheels while being infinitely more strong.
The Maxxis Ardent Race is an incredible XC tire. It rolls quickly but has incredible grip. Everyone should try this tire for XC or Trail riding.
The SRAM Guide brakes have incredible power with a huge amount of modulation. There's no off and on feel with these brakes, and they've done away with the issues SRAM brakes once faced.
ENVE bars, stem and seat post round out the contact points. These have convinced me that ENVE is neither aluminum or Carbon, but it's own material. Incredibly stiff, yet no discomfort at all.
These ESI Racer's Edge grips are incredibly simple and comfortable. Their made of silicone, last a long time and are great at reducing vibration.

A 21lb XC race machine that feels just as comfortable on a steep fire road as it does in a burly rock garden reserved for DH or Enduro. The 69° head tube angle, long front center, low bottom bracket and short head tube make the bike extremely aggressive but very forgiving. It will handle like a surgeon's scalpel but never punish you for it, especially with 120mm suspension up front and the surprisingly capable 100mm in the rear.
