Most people riding hardtails are looking for a bit more pop and agility compared to out right stability. The rear of your bike is going to be bouncing anyways so you are going to ride rear center or off the back of the bike even if you are going fast. So basically without rear suspension...more

I don't want to sound like a dick, hence why I just said "no" (so maybe you could go research this). You are wrong for two big reasons.

1) Your hypothesis isn't right to begin with. Go look at any non-high pivot. Measure the amount the wheel path comes forward. You'll find even a bike that isn't a high pivot extends backwards first then goes forward. In fact, where the bike sags *usually* is going to make for *longer* chainstays

Now, lets get into the details....The amount the rear center changes is going to vary by brand/model/travel but with respect to a ~140mm bike its usually about 2-5mm back and 5-10mm forward. However, in most circumstances, the rear center is going to feel relatively static. Why? Because the real growth "forward" is only felt in the last 30% of the travel. From 0-70% the bike's rear center feels very much the same. This is where 98% of your riding takes place. You aren't feeling a few mms either direction. If it was really notable, we'd all be riding designs that minimize rear center changes (and we'd all be faster because of it), but we don't, because like I said, - under most riding conditions its going to be very close in length to whatever the static length was/is. A few mms simply isn't material.

2) Go ahead and search in the Vital archives. I started a very comprehensive thread about the qualitative reasons longer chainstays are often better. These qualities are some of the reasons rear centers have grown, especially on bikes aimed at going as fast as possible down a mountain. It has a lot more to do with balancing the rider's position between two wheels. I can back this up objectively, too.

1. it certainly is "a thing" - calling all trail builders? b. with that said, let me clarify what i mean about tracking up lips and landings. this consideration is for rhythm/dirt jump lines or pumptracks that are manicured and, as mentioned, SOFT. bigger knobs will track up lips and...more

Agree with Spomer on this. In the same way that mud spikes are known to squirm on rocks and roots, Magic Mary’s can squirm and fold on a super hard-packed trail, especially if you’re hitting a berm, steep lip, or banked lip with additional g-forces. It’s the opposite of traction- it’s...more

Yet again, we have athletes diagnosing their own concussions (more or less). When I was advocating for some kind of baseline testing (on the Inside Line), this is why I was advocating for it. You can have a mild concussion which is nearly impossible ... more »

Nice review. I'd love to throw a leg over one. Prior iterations of this bike had great handling characteristics with not-so-great bump eating performance. I could never put my finger on exactly why this was (on paper it should have been good).

Regardless, I'd buy one of these as my do-everything bike if money were no object (or I just keep making bad financial decisions).

"Currently the "bike with soul" seems to be YT"

...ah yes, the company with an ex Amazon VP as CEO backed by private equity all the while cutting out bike shops. Yes, indeed, that company just screams "SOULLLLLLL"

Lol. This is a fake account right>?

" SC is not anywhere near as large as the anchor brands...."

...might want to do some homework on that one.

You've really dug yourself a nice hole on this one. I'm not even sure what you are saying outside of just being mad a company (or a group of companies) grew?

On one hand you are talking about the obscure brotique (no typo) brands as though they somehow hold the keys to bike bro cultural holiness while you yourself ride an "anchor brand" (yet another made up term) because they can somehow warranty parts better?

I came back to write about the obnoxiousness of "warranty culture" in the bike industry but will leave it to another thread.

A little bit of a derail here, but this theme keeps coming up in this thread. One thing I genuinely wonder a lot about is if we were more up front with contracts, and what riders really get paid (EG, every ball sport), would that change things for the ... more »
