Added a new video Brook Macdonald Rallies All Things Off-Road 6/11/2015 3:42 PM

The fastest Kiwi on the UCI World Cup series gives us an insight into what he does in between races. Racers based in the southern hemisphere can count themselves fortunate to live an endless summer. During the middle of the year, they take to the summer race tracks of Europe and North America for the UCI World Cup. Then they return home to Australia and New Zealand just before temperatures dip to enjoy more bone-dry riding. But of course, no matter the season, there's always the need to stay fit, healthy and race-sharp. With that in mind, Brook Macdonald shows us how he likes to unwind in his native Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

Added a comment about product review 2015 Test Sessions: Liv Intrigue 1 5/20/2015 12:00 AM

Hi laurenp_oz,

You are right, the size guide does suggest that given Amanda and my heights, we should be on a size Small. However, we know what geometry numbers we are most comfortable with on a bike, and use these to choose our size, sometimes ignoring rider-height-to-frame-size charts based on our own experience and preferences.

We rode a size Medium bike for testing because we know we prefer a longer bike reach (that's the horizontal distance between the bottom bracket and the top of the headtube). The added reach makes for a more stable ride, particularly when heading downhill. Personally, I've also had a problem with back spasms when on a bike that's too small. If you too like a longer reach, the only thing you need to watch out for when sizing up is that you have enough standover height.

On the Giant/Live website, the Tempt 2 doesn't list a reach to compare to the Intrigue, but looking at the top tube length and seat tube angles, your Medium Tempt 2 is actually pretty equivalent to a Large Intrigue. If you are looking for a slightly more compact ride, consider the Medium Intrigue. The Small is quite a bit smaller than what you are used to.

If you aren't sure what kind of geometry you prefer, try to demo an Intrigue from a bike shop that carries Giant bikes and see how it feels when climbing and descending.

Hope you find a great bike and happy trails!

- C

Added a new video Trail Riding Quadra Island 4/22/2015 12:12 AM

Fault Line TV explores the trails of Quadra Island. From Fault Line TV: "Quadra Island’s website states that the island residents are an extremely diverse and unique community of individuals, who share the passion of the island existence, but enjoy a variety of different professions. When we talk about individuality, a picture is painted of forging your own path and creating one’s own free existence. Sam Whittingham is very much so at the core of individuality. Sam created Naked Bicycles, a handmade bicycle manufacturer situated on Quadra Island, a cornerstone in the discovery islands. "Our first stop on Quadra was Naked Bicycles; to meet Sam, and thoroughly discuss the trail network he is responsible for creating. After an enlightening conversation about his workshop, and the interesting client base he has created, we got guided around the trails in the forest behind his house. This was a great introduction to the trail designs that trend across the island. "The trails that we were lucky enough to ride incorporated steep climbs, steep descents, and everything in between with one exception to the rule. Crikey Creek is the local shuttle trail, this trail is short and fast, best enjoyed on a trail bike. It includes from what we’ve seen, the largest amount of man-made jumps and turns. Due to deforestation methods, Crikey Creek did not succumb to clear cutting. Because it is situated right alongside a stream, the area has been preserved. The lack of logging makes for an absolutely beautiful second growth, moss-covered understory, and the trail seems to be painted into the landscape. "When juxtaposed against the ridge trail Silk Stockings, which is composed primarily of rock, we start to get an idea of what Quadra’s trail network offers in its entirety. Though polar to Crikey Creek, Silk Stockings brings the same beauty through its wide-open views of the ocean and abundance of moss covered rock. It’s not as developed, and requires work to go fast, but the pain suffered on the climb is well worth the descent. "The Quadra trail network is incredible, but don’t stop there. With a large portion of the island being uninhabited, this offers the chance to witness relatively undisturbed ecosystems. Make sure to bring your mountain bike on any adventure you wish to undertake."
