Sigh. Here we go again. Bring on the ignorant hate.
LOL. I have no skin in the game. Like I said. I'm 50/50 on them. Read the comments though. I'm not the only one
What irks me is the negative mindset. Do you give equestrians an earful for not "earning it"? Horses turn most trails to shit and they literally have a mind of their own which can be dangerous to everyone around them. We don't give them crap because they were there first so a precedent has been set.
I've been into all kinds of sports where the new thing was hated on and dismissed by the old guard....skiers hated snowboarders, water-skiers hated wakeboarders, surfers hated windsurfers and then surfers AND windsurfers hated kiteboarders etc, etc.
E bikes have zero additional impact on the trail. They are marginally faster uphill and slower at everything else.
The ONLY issue is the negative perception which admittedly is very real when it comes to trail access.
It's just a bummer that most people's first reaction to something similar but new is a negative one.
The world would be a better, more peaceful place if we could all have more open minds.

Did I say they do better downhill than a regular bike? They don't but good ones are pretty close these days. Look up Marshal Mullen.
You're right though. Climbing is fun especially when you're fit.
Still not a reason to hate on e-bikes.
All I'm saying is look at the positives and not only the negatives and also realize that other people are not in YOUR specific situation.....fitness level, disability, age, access to lifts/ shuttles etc etc etc
Just for the record. The bike in my shed that sees the majority of my rides is a hardtail. Second to that is a regular enduro bike.

Yes. They're great for getting new people into the sport....more people is better lobbying power against hikers and equestrians right?
They're also great for getting pretty deep quickly so you can dig your ass off for an afternoon.
They're also great for towing little kids to the top of the trail so they can cruise down.
They're also great for less fit people to mix in and enjoy a group ride
They're also great for finding new trails

Going off the modern definition of a "motorbike" they are not the same thing. There is no throttle for one thing. They don't roost, they don't make noise, there is no internal combustion engine, they only "assist" WHEN you pedal, they cut off at under 20mph etc, etc, etc
To include it in the same breath as say a CRF 450 R is plain ignorant or intentionally misleading for the sake of being against them.
Having spent a good amount of my life on a dirt bike and now enough time on an e-bike to have a solid opinion I would say my feelings towards them is 50/50.
What I don't agree with is the knee jerk negative and uninformed reactions that people seem to have.

That bike looks really heavy and a lot to handle. Do e-bikes do as well as a regular bike at descending? Hell no. Do they have any more impact on the trail than a regular bike? Hell no.
Just get over it and admit to yourself that the real reason you hate them is because you hope no one steals your Strava times.

Exactly. Ignorance is bliss though and we all need something to be outraged about.

No offense but if you cant tell the difference between an e-bike and a motorcycle it's you who's the idiot.

You nailed it! This is the root of why mountain bikers "hate" e-bikes. They feel like their precious Strava times are at risk. No one will admit it but when I do pass regular riders the first thing I hear is "cheater!".
Where I ride people are Strava obsessed and have no problem endangering trail access by blowing by other users in the name of a good Strava time.
I'll totally admit that I use, enjoy and pay attention to Strava while on my regular bike.
Curiously though when I'm on a pedal assist it's the furthest thing from my mind. It just doesn't matter on the climbs because it comes down to who wants to burn the most batt and on the descents my regular enduro bike is WAY faster.

Why are they a touchy subject.? In a word. Ignorance.
Ignorance from the hikers and equestrians who have tried to ban bikes in general from trails for years.
Ignorance from the law makers regarding bikes on trails in general.
Ignorance from the law makers who are making knee jerk reactions to e-bikes.
Ignorance from the mountain bikers who have never ridden one.
Ignorance and the resulting resistance to something new is human nature and I'm not saying that e-bikes are not without their sins and that there are not real issues surrounding them.
What I am saying to those that are very opposed to them is please make sure you have the experience to make an informed comment rather than a negative knee jerk reaction.
To a man every person I know ( this includes very fit and very skilled riders) do a 180 on their position on pedal assist mountain bikes after putting in some real time on one.

Snow-Cal. I love that trail. It is pretty buff with just a few sniper rocks. @Daniel_Layton Its a nice change to all the super sharp, rocky loose over hardpack that we typically ride around here.

He's definitely a rider that still inspires me. Some brand should at least flow him some frames. Robot bike co how about you?

A distinction needs to be made between a pedal assist and a "throttle bike". With a pedal assist you don't go roosting around and riding uphill at the same speed you descend and the negative impact on a trail is about the same as any other mtb.
Bikes where you can simply throttle up and blast away fall more into the e-motor bike category for me and I whole heartedly agree that they don't belong on no-motorized trails.

If you live in a house with modern appliances, use a computer and a smart phone and drive to the trail head just get off the "wasted energy" high horse already.

Only if your friends are dicks. I've done a lot of rides lately where some were on E and others not. If you're on E it's your duty to push your buds who aren't.
