I like it, but wish it was more expensive.

FWIW, I came to this realization back when I had my first generation Transition Smuggler with a 160 (gasp) fork on it. That bike was f'ing awesome. It was way too heavy, but it showed me what an XC/trail bike could/should be. To date, that remains one of my favorite bikes.

I know I nauseate people with my "see they do it like this in the moto world", but yeah, all dirt bikes basically have the same geo be it if its for the track, a GNCC or something for Erzberg.

While I understand the XC side of things was more or less derived from road bike geometry, I think this needs to be completely shelved. I feel cognitive bias has more to do with that geometry remaining the norm on the XC side than outright performance.

The steepest head angle we should see going forward is 66 with 63-65 being the norm. Playing with fork offset will have a bit effect on handling, and the "feel" of the front end, too, and this isn't fully being exploited yet.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, really wish I could go pick one of these up!

Nailed it.

Larger negative volumes means you can run higher overall pressure without losing your small bump.

I have found it interesting how everyone seems to push toward adding volume spacers to let them drop pressure for supposedly a more supple feel. This is the opposite of what works IMO. It just causes the fork to ride lower, near the firmer part of its travel. It ramps up harder, that's about it.

Pull the spacers, add more pressure. That'll give you a better feeling fork for most riders. Add more negative volume and now you can keep great small bump off the top, keep the fork higher in its travel so its got more avaliable travel, and make it so that travel requires less force to go through.

Tuning like this gives you a coil-like feel that we are all jumping ship (to coil) to find.

All that sounds great in theory, but we still haven't nailed it. I can't quiet get my fork's spring to work in a way where its riding where it should, not bottoming, using most of its stroke and staying somewhat supple in all hits - sharp and small to big and compressioney (technical term).

There is always going to be some compromise, at least for now...

GREAT episode. I’ve been thoroughly pleased with Push for years now having 3 shocks done over the years and most recently Darren’s wife, Christina, gave me solid advice on which used Fox fork to get that would be best suited to their tune so once I got it I had the factory tune performed on it. Great company at every level and it was fascinating to hear about the beginnings.

Remember when XTR hubs laced to 517s was the hot shit wheelbuild? And suddenly alloy nipples came out and you could get some fancy looking shits? And your shop would handbuild them and it'd be like 600 bucks? And then Crossmax and Deemax wheels came out and they were like $800 and everyone though that was really fucking expensive.
Now we get excited when wheels only cost 2 grand.
And get off my lawn!

Specialized pants on both of them. #teamrumors2020

EDIT: maybe they're just his friend's pants, since, you know, he 'forgot his kit' or something.

It's 2019, bizutch! Everyone is on tubeless. Good catch though. It has been added to the review.

Definitely a bit shortsighted of Kona on your rims. Ghetto tubeless could be an option for you.

Honestly you can run tubeliss on that setup. Doesn't Bruni run 25mm rims on his DH steed tubeless? Ghetto tubeless would work well, too. That'd be my choice.

Either way, I know those rims will work tubeliss. Do it.

BTW, I mean this with all due respect, but why not try more gear "trials" first hand? You've been around mountain bike internet land for 20+ years. You should be able to give something a go like this and flip back if you hate it in less time than you spend on Vital everyday.

There is a reason everyone runs tubeless, and its not some mass mountain bike industry conspiracy.
