Reply to Is the 29 / 27.5 combo (97.5) bike here to stay? 3/23/2019 12:26 AM

Not exactly science (I’m really stupid) but when tipped over the smaller wheel will (in theory) turn with a tighter arc than the larger one. Though I haven’t read anything from anyone who’s yet to have felt any affect from this whether negative or positive. ... more »

I trust whatever Neko says implicitly. And he’s already told me and the rest of instaland “meh”. In all seriousnous I don’t think it’s gonna stick around for long, maybe not even long enough to score a win and even if somebody does get a win it won’t ... more »

Reply to Where is the Head Angle Sweetspot for Enduro/Trail? 2/14/2019 12:16 PM

I was super happy to see the numbers on that bike. Gave me the sense that it had been designed to work rather than sell purely on the geo being moar slack than everyone else (looking at you every single manufacturer).

Sam Hill is a great guy to watch and I always pay close attention to his bike checks etc to check out his personal tweaks. He is one of few riders at the top of the sport who really seems to understand (whether he consciously thinks about it or not) ... more »

You have actually tried it on your own bike for yourself so your findings are obviously legit and I’m not here to question that - I’m happy you found a way to make your ride work better for you. And you make another good point that as well as all those ... more »

Agreed. Don’t believe tuck necessarily related to ‘normal’ or more offset alone. Ime it can also be an issue with reduced offset. With the caveat that reducing offset will generally put more weight on the front wheel and therefore more grip all else ... more »

Reply to Sag and Negative Travel - Discuss 2/2/2018 1:04 AM

I am aware of that but there seem to be fewer considerations made in the design process for sag than a few years ago (I could be wrong, these are very much just a lay persons observations). More and more people are seeing the advantages of a simple rising ... more »

Reply to Sag and Negative Travel - Discuss 2/1/2018 10:45 AM

If anything I think too much emphasis is put on using the fabled 30% sag and not enough on how different riders, different riding styles etc may work better with varying amounts of sag. In fact I think that even talking about sag misses the point. I ... more »

Reply to Current Enduro Bikes, One bike to rule them all, or all hype? 1/31/2018 11:25 AM

Unless you live next to some serious DH terrain then a 160mm bike IS a DH bike. They’re designed so you can ride back to the top which is great but I still spend a lot of time pushing back up sketchy hillsides. I want to own a proper DH bike, a bike ... more »

Reply to Have You Gone from 27.5 to 29er But Then Back to 27.5? 12/14/2017 11:39 AM

I don’t really get wheel flop on climbs, that’s not where it bothers me - I don’t even notice it going uphill (maybe cus I don’t corner a lot on climbs) In fact I’d say slacker angles and more trail help keep the front wheel nice and smooth and straight ... more »

Reply to Have You Gone from 27.5 to 29er But Then Back to 27.5? 12/14/2017 8:18 AM

I was riding a Mega 290 with a 64° HA 46mm offset. The chain stays are 450mm on those so the thing was quite long (1220mm wheelbase on a medium iirc). I am 5’6”. It was great at high velocity as you can imagine. But the high axles, slack HA and shorter ... more »

Yes. The 29er was a pig in the air. Pretty good everywhere else but I love me some jumps. It was good at landing though, you could land in a rock garden without even a flinch.

Reply to Will 29ers Impact 2018 World Cup DH Results? 11/21/2017 10:35 AM

I agree, I think that for some riders the new 29er DH bikes may help unlock potential that was stymied on 26 or 650b just because the bike works better under them. This may be something ever more present than last season as there’ll be more teams with ... more »

I agree, for me all the measurements are as important as one another as they all affect one another. If you’re accustomed to looking at geo charts you’ll already be calculating the down tube measurement, perhaps without even realising it. CP just likes ... more »

Reply to How Much Reach is Too Much Reach? 11/18/2017 12:36 PM

I think what Primoz means is that for a given effective top tube, a steeper seat angle will yield a longer reach. I.e if you keep the ETT the same and steepen the seat angle the down tube grows longer and therefore so does reach. Or have I misunderstood? ... more »

Reply to Do tire inserts mean it's time to rethink tire design? 11/16/2017 12:25 AM

Didn’t see the ride monkey thread but I have to agree. For me if you’re riding for the downs then DH or DD tyres are by far superior to the exo (Xc) tyres. And it’s not just because they are more resilient, they squirm less and are way more damped. But
