I would be interested to see how they fare after being greased in the long term. Maybe the are dry from the factory (which is weird), but I was assuming they were greased since they were in the past. I haven't actually opened a new one, but I will soon. I still think the amount of moisture that makes it past the seals is a major concern. Greasing them will help, but I dont think it will really be a long term solution. I think redesigned seals is what's needed.

As for giving them credit, you are right, the new drivetrain feels great other than the clutch issue.

I still think they have other issues like their brakes which are a major disappointment that they dont seem to care about. But, most people who ride shimano brakes acknowledge it but dont seem to care either. I just cant stand it, and honestly it is unsafe for myself. If you drive it in deep and need consistency and predictability, shimano brakes have not offered that for the last 5 years...

I agree. Shimano has faltered in many ways over the last decade, and it seems be only getting worse. I cannot believe they won't fix their brake issues - mainly inconsistent lever feel. When my 785 XTs were toast, I switched to hope because I could not tolerate their newer designs vague feel. It took some getting used to, but I love that the Hope's are consistent. I also have a sram xo drivetrain now. All brands have their issues, but shimano doesn't seem to care...its sad.

Ok, well in the above thread someone did mention theirs coming with little or no grease. So maybe you should.

It is lubed when new, so lubing it so early - no. I would be worried if I washed my bike with water often. In theory it could be ruined if you washed your bike with a hose after the first ride, and then it sat with moisture in the clutch for a month. The amount of rust that builds up is kind of crazy...so if you wash your bike and let it sit, maybe pop the adjustment access plug open to let it air dry inside. Just dont forget to shut it before a ride. That might be the best solution. That and greasing it every 30-50 hours of ride time.

I'm just disappointed because their previous 10 and 11s derailleurs would go years without needing clutch maintenance. The sealing is remarkably less effective than previous versions. I agree though...as long as people keep up on service, probably needed every 30-50 hours of ride time, then it's fine. I just think it's a failure because there is such a significant decrease in the sealing performance versus previous models. Most people don't service their clutches, let alone much on their bikes besides chain in that short of a time frame.

Yes, in my estimation about 1/4 of them have the problem you described before the first chain is worn out. It is a problem, especially in wet climates or if you wash your bike regularly...that is exactly what I described below, and there have been other people agreeing. Apparently XTR is also affected...I cant wait for all the deore groups to start failing...those customers often maxed out their budget, and feel that the bike should be flawless for years...shimano needs to do something.

A super dry and dusty region in Idaho, USA. We are a high desert. Not gritty, no loam, just fine dust. I am guessing our clientele like to use a hose, but we coach them all to avoid it. Our trail management group likes to build bridges over anything that might have an inch or more flowing water in the spring. I am astonished how bad the seal is on the p-knuckle is. I think the water gets in the backside where the spring is housed, not the cover over the clutch, or the plugged access to adjust the tension...wherever it gets in from, there is not much resistance preventing it.

If you want a review of what we have seen in the shop regarding this drivetrain, I have it.

Pretty much everything he described is accurate, but the rear derailleur has one critical flaw:
The sealing on the guide pulley pivot/ clutch mechanism is sub par. At least 1/4 of the many xt 12s drivetrains we have sent out/ serviced suffer from premature corrosion in the clutch. It is so bad that sometimes the cage cannot return to its tensioning position when shifting to higher gears. Best case it causes very inconsistent clutch breakaway torque. You can identify it by cycling the cage forward repeatedly and feeling for variance in the torque required. The majority are inconsistent after only a few months. Aggressive bike washers have ruined theirs in only one month!
Almost half of the ones I have cracked open are astonishingly rusty inside - like the rustiest I have ever seen before regarding any derailleur.

It is definitely something I expect shimano to redesign...it is really suprising they let it go out to consumers like it is now.

To me, the complete lack of flow to the choppy editing made it hard to watch. I would rather watch a stable camera film needles and show us more than 1 seconds clips.

How many enduro bikes are allowing 38t chain rings these days. That's what caught my attention. And I like it. I'm still on 2x10 because I want to pedal at 30mph...this would allow that also....pretty sweet. Hopefully the split pivot chain stay bearings stay put better than they do on treks....warrantied a lot of rear chain stays lately....
