In a big city, ready access to dirt normally poses a challenge (especially in London). Usually you need to jump in the car, or hop on a train, to get your off road fix. Quite often this means adopting the skinnier wheeled discipline for entertainment, but choosing a pair of smaller wheels can be just as rewarding. Although there may be a little bit of rivalry between those of the 20 inch and 26 inch (and not to forget 27.5 and 29...) variety, BMX offers a great way to keep your skills and fitness up in the off season. We checked out the scene at our local track in South East London.

Recent recipient ofPinkbikes's 'Share The Ride' program,Peckham BMX club found their new home in Burgess Park in August 2013. In one of the more deprived areas of the English Capital, the club has got a large and successful following since moving to its new home. Among its members include Quillan Isidore (2 time UK National Champion and U16 World Champion) and commander in chief CK Flash, DJ and inspiration behind the friendly and hard working atmosphere at the club.

The track is prime!

Another great thing about the club is that you don't need to invest in a bike to get involved! For a £15 year membership, you can go along to one of the club's training sessions held 3 times a week for a year (one for both beginners and anther intermediates/experts) and for £3 a session you can hire a BMX and helmet for a session. Infinitely more entertaining than sitting in a gym, or getting through the miles on the turbo, BMX can really enhance your riding skills. It tests your pressure control, pumping and carrying speed over rough ground, whilst also keeping your spatial awareness (having an eye out for the 5 other riders on the track). This translates really well onto bigger bikes, and get the adrenaline going ! The club also do training specific sessions, where you can expect to get involved with some circuit training and interval laps of the track, helping to keep your off the bike fitness topped up.

Sessions held throughout the winter under floodlights

So if you are living in London, we definitely recommend heading along and giving it a try. OnEaster weekend (April the 19th) the club is hosting its first ever race event with free bike usage and a host of local radio DJ's providing some entertainment, giving you the perfect opportunity to see what the club is all about.
