I can't see how the risk of death or serious life changing injury will ever outweigh the reward.

Look at Jules Bianchi. An F1 driver, wealthy and supported in a sport where driver safety is number one priority and he still paid the ultimate price.

I...more

Yes I completely understand where you are coming from man. We have the sam problem here in my country, it is really shocking.

My persona experience as an athlete, sometimes I did and needed the boost that Red Bull or monster or even a rockstar energy drink gave me, but that is me that i am an athlete and i needed the "extra" boost. I have had this conversation and debate with my friends ( most are athletes) about how the consumation of energy drinks should be a bit more controlled to kids and to people who dont exactly need it. to me it is not really red bulls resposibility to do that, because if only 1 energy drink company does it, doesnt mean that the others are going to do the same.

But i do completely understand what you mean and i am aware of the bad things that can come of it, im not much of a energy drink person, but every now and then i do try a red bull or something or even just a couple of cans of coca-cola to keep myself running a little while longer.

Completely understand where you are coming from man. But i personaly think that Red Bull like any other energy drink, it serves a porpose and it is design for some people that will actually use it. it is like race fuel, you dont put it on ur daily drived score moms van right?!

Well i'm going to start by wishing all the injured riders a speedy recovery and specially to Paul since we kinda share the same name haha. All the best to all and thank you for pushing yourselves to the absolute limit of your capicity to bring our sport to new levels by risking it everyday so we don't really have to.

As for Red Bull and Rampage as an event (i wasnt able to watch or attended but i follow it every year), but i do follow it every year thanks to Vital and other mountain biking sites.

I personally would only do the rampage course if it was a personal challenge and only if i was seriously highly paid, because it is amazingly dangerous and I highly respect everyone who even things of doing it. i compare rampage as the absa cape epic of down hill mountain biking. that is the true event were you separate the men from the boys, the separation we always seek to find in us. But I do not agree that pros dont get as much as they should ans specially risking the way the risk.

I cant really badmouth and complain that it is Red Bull's fault or it is the riders fault for going to the event, because someday one way or another someone would eventually do it and get injured and that someone could be either one of us, a pro, an amature or even just your stupid avarge Joe thinking he is going to be the next eveil kanevel or whatever goes through his mind when he is at the top of such a high mountain and thinking of dropping down.

And i seriously dont agree that Red Bull does not let you take pictures or post pictures of the crashes and so on. we should all be aware of the dangers the pro riders are facing and we should all know what happened. They should just really grow a bigger pair and be way more responsible to give the riders the proper medical coverage they deserve and the proper safety in such a high risk event.

(this is something that doesnt only happen with red bull, here, where i live, this is a problem in sports in general)

But this is something that we should assume that such a big company should solve with a bit more ease. I do understand that they might be in a budget and it might not just be as simple as we all talk and say it should be, but the truth to the matter and fact is that it is a change that has got to happen sooner than we think it should happen. the devistation this is causing on the riders families and friends, not to speak of the devistation it is causing on they fan base, it is only making it smaller and not what it should be happening when they launched the even that it was definetelly to make the sport grow and make it more appealing. Sure you cant make it easy to seem that everyone can do it and anyone can be a pro just like in another sport, but you also got to make it so it is appealing for other people to want to do what you are doing and not call you crazy and stupid for doing it. sure we all share some common stupidity and crazyness for the sport and to see someone do something we cant just so we can have the hunger and sleep at night dreaming to one day be like them. But in all that we all assum that they have the perfect condition that we dont have to want to do that as they life and (as we say in mozambique) as their main bread in come everyday.

It is trully saddening to me as a mountainbiker and a huge fan of Red bull and their riders to know that things are at this pace. it seems like the difference between being a pro and being a crazy ameture mountain biker isnt as big as it should be.

Again I wish all the best to all the injured riders and hope they all have a super speedy recovery so they can get back on their bikes again and show us their extreme skill and teach us novices a thing or too of what it is all about.

A couple of years ago I went riding with a friend... and to get to the spot where we would usually ride.. you have to do this tar downhill section down a road... so as we where going down the road... i overtook my friend on his bike and a couple of cars and on this slight right hand bend there was a tree that fell in the middle of the road, blocking the road... but that as the least of my problems while i was breaking and trying to go from 55.6km/h to 0 or just slow enough to figure out where i would go... but as i was breaking.. there was some water on the floor from a sewer pipe that the tree broke when it fell... so when my wheels go to the water.. .they looked up and i slide on the floor for about 5m until i finally stopped... my friend saw the whole thing happen and he almost fell on the same place... even the cars i passed where having trouble on that spot .. gladly i was already up and putting water on the road raxes i had on my left elbow and cleaning my t-shirt and my fox short who gladly didnt rip or else i probably would not be here today.. oh and i also broke my silverback helmet and my bike just got some bent bars (witch i only noticed 3 months ago... 2 or 3 years after the crash) and i got a minor head trauma.... by the way.. i was/am riding a 2010 Silverback Phoenix wink
