210x57mm DHX2 on mine giving ~160mm rear travel. Rear end feels super supple - to the point that the 36's up front now feel like they need an upgrade to balance things out. I also got on with the factory DPX2 though, but am only 160lbs.

Ordered my evo 29 S2 3 days ago. I wasn't very very relaxed when I saw the title of the review... But finally everything is fine. Just have to wait for the delivery!

Yeah it's an adjustment for sure. My last bike was at 339mm (2016 SJ 27.5 - 335mm with the standard 150mm fork. I ran the bike at 160mm) and I had no issues with it at all, even with 175mm cranks. The Evo 29 is 328mm in low mode, 334 in high mode, and now 338mm with adding 10mm to the...more

I'm riding a Patrol at 340mm. I've gotten used to it, but I definitely had to incorporate some ratcheting and careful pedaling through/up tech. I can't imagine 328...

Everything about the EVO looks great except for that BB height. I own a Jeffsy 29 which is a full 1cm higher, and depsite running 160mm forks, 2.6 tyres, low rear sag and 170mm cranks, it is still too low. I have smashed my cranks/rotor into rocks multiple times resulting in broken...more

Totally unrelated, but I just realized how positive of an environment the vital comments section usually is. I wonder why that is..sure would make social medias more fun if it were more often like this.

I recently picked up a Stumpy 29 alloy comp after demoing the regular stumpy and the ST. I gave an EVO the old parking lot test but it did not feel immediately comfortable compared to the ST or regular stumpy. I attribute some of this to the stack height. I really like the higher...more

Jeff - I ride the mountains of northern Utah mostly, with some southern Utah desert riding thrown in a couple times a year for good measure. Lotsa pedaling, lotsa searching for fun dh lines. I demoed plenty of bikes last year and the 140r/160f(ish) 29ers are my sweet spot. I'll do the occasional race for fun but on the dh am just racing myself and my crew, no stress. I currently ride an XL 2017 stumpy 29 with Topaz rear and dual position Lyrik (160-130) up front and am digging the steeper STAs and slacker HTAs on the newer bikes. I have no brand allegiance.

The evo is a few bucks less but I like the BBH more on the Sentinel, like you said. If I went evo I'd throw in a 160 air shaft and run it in the high position, mostly to keep from destroying crank arms and pedal spindles (which i did last year). Maybe an evo with a Topaz would help that rear end? I wouldn't go coil or long shock it though like some evo owners are doing. I might try to raise the bb a little more with an offset bushing. Just thinking out loud. I already have a carbon wheelset and fresh set of e13 rubber (semi slick rear) to compliment either bike.

Thanks for the review and your helpful comments, Jeff. Right now I'm split between the EVO and the NX carbon Sentinel ($400 more) for my next bike. Is there anything else major you're like to call out between the two? I've ridden the Sentinel several times and really like it.

I'd wager I am more critical of bikes than most testers. The funny part is this review was literally supposed to take place over one week in the desert and turned into an entire spring, summer and fall. Which was good. It really let me suss out performance of both bikes, and compare...more

Ever time yourself on the same track? I've timed myself down the same track with the same bike in the same condition in back to back runs and can absolutely guarantee I will see at least 1 second variance for every minute on course. Would a WC rider be more...more

boaz I’m also 6’1” and did a bunch of XL demos this year, each around 500mm reach like the Sentinel, sb130, Process 153 29 and some others. They were the longest bikes I’ve ever ridden but with modern climbing positions and short stems they felt pretty damn good. Still long bikes especially the Sentinel as it’s all raked out but I was surprised how comfortable and normal they felt. Highly recommend finding an XL Sentinel demo or otherwise. Also, FWIW I loved the Sentinel and sb130, the Process not as much. Good on Nicolai, others are starting to follow their lead and Pole’s.

Jukulae - any other Stumpy EVO thoughts? Too dh oriented for a trail bike? EVO pricing is good and I’m considering it. I’ve ridden the Sentinel and really like it and due to the similarities am looking at the EVO also. The alu Sentinel is too heavy and looks like the EVO S3 29 comes in about a pound heavier than the carbon Sentinel which is still 1.5 lbs lighter than an alu Sent. The new Genius looks good too with the updated rear shock.

I recently test road the S2 and S3. I’m 6’ and can say I could get along with either size. The S3 is big but I managed just fine. Loads of stability. I ride a 2018 Scott genius and compared to that the stumpy evo doesn’t climb near as well. Downhill the evo is awesome but honesty...more
