It's an unbadged tire, which for Maxxis usually indicates proto or pre-production. If I remember correctly it's a 2.5/29 with a Double Down casing. Currently I believe DD is only available on the 2.3/29.

E*thirteen Tire Plasma Sealant

The orange glow is from the red roof of the Santa Cruz tent. It was definitely more white than anything else. On the black tire the residue looked a bit blue in person but camera sensors see things their own way sometimes. It is most definitely e13, I watched Iago's mechanic open the plastic pack and pour it in.

Wait, but the internet told us just last week that 29ers were unfair because short guys can't ride them?

Blame the editor. Plenty of choice words were left on the cutting room floor. Not for PC reasons as much as trying to keep the overall length reasonable and Sven's other comments are more entertaining than a string of f-bombs. The recce rides have always been full of banter among the group (which unfortunately doesn't get picked up on the gopro) and less about cursing our way down the hill.

I read this all the time too and have to scratch my head a bit. I've really seen no evidence of this at all other than than the odd section like what was done to 100m of MSA last year (and if anyone can remember back to the old MSA start straight from 2007'ish they've actually added about a dozen corners over the years to just that section alone). MSA has always been the freeway of the circuit going back decades. Ft. William remains relatively unchanged since its a permanent track, though rumors of a new lower section this year. Leogang added new tech bits and tightened corners, Lenzerheide added corners, Andorra has countless corners and very few pure straightaways. My guess is that camera placements often chosen for maximum recording time are limited to the straighter sections of each track, combined with the fact that riders now tend to take the most direct line over and through rather than around rocks, stumps, holes, etc gives the impression that tracks are getting straighter. I've seen chicanes put in that riders still figure out how to straighten in ways the track designers never anticipated. So to some degree it's the bikes and the riders themselves who are also straightening out some parts of the tracks, though running the same tracks year after year on the same racing line doesn't do much to help. That said, I fully support a return to more Schladming-like designs. #MoarRoooooost

In theory, factory teams always have an advantage over smaller teams in any sport. I see no reason to to brand this 'unfair.' It's the nature of racing. Reading some of the comments here you'd thing the 29er is going to ride itself down the hill, while ... more »

275 hasn't ruined DH racing (despite all the comment chatter that it surely would), can't see how 29 will either. Yeah so maybe it rolls faster and carries speed over the rough bits, but that extra speed still needs to be controlled so it's not like ... more »

I'm not sure how increasing the wheels size suddenly changes the current tracks to be flatter or less rough? I doubt you'll see anyone removing the rocks from Val di Sole or rerouting the final pitch of the Andorra track any time soon. There definitely ... more »

More likely than not, those aren't the tires that are on the bike when Gee rides it. No reason to have Steve riding on something they may not want seen just yet.

I'm not so sure about the brief flat tire epidemic at the start of 2014 being the result of 275 wheels. Recall the first two rounds were South Africa and Cairns where riders where often opting for lighter casing tires and then quite a few flats early ... more »

He qualified for MSA in 2007 on a version of that bike, first 29er to race a WC. It definitely had Nevegals though I'm not sure they even had DH casings at the time. I believe he was running a Fox 40 with some file work done to the crown to make the ... more »
