With the rim strip and the new extra carbon these things weigh more and are less durable than a Stans or DT Swiss rim. Why does anybody buy them?

Stans Flows are in exactly the same niche as these. They're also about the same weight.

My observations was that in the past the carbon rim wave was being marketed as way more stiff, 100g-ish lighter, and more durable. We all know carbon rims being more durable than alu rims is bullshit. I'm convinced they really are stiffer. I'm no weight weenie (42lb bike), but lighter rims make a massive difference in bike handling and how light a bike pedals. If stiffer wheels was the icing on the cake, then lighter weight (at no penalty) is the actual cake that would have probably convinced me to eat the price tag and go carbon on my trail bike. It has just been really disappointed coming back to this topic after a few years and finding out that carbon rims haven't really gotten anywhere.

I'm really happy Alu rims have gotten better though. I'm very glad to see those MTX's, Singletracks, and 729/721's, get replaced by the current crop of Alu rims that are equally capable and much lighter.

I've been out of the loop for some time but have their carbon wheels lost the edge in weight too? Their rim weight is about the same as a Stans Flow rim.
