Added a new video The Solution // Craig Bierly's Wanderlust Way 11/9/2021 10:16 AM

You can buy just about anything in this world but time, and Craig Bierly is a man who truly understands the sacred and finite gift of time. After dedicating 26 years of his life to the aerospace industry, he could have comfortably retired to a sedentary life in a big house. Instead, he opted for a nomadic life in his van—long before #vanlife became a hipster trend and hashtag. More than a decade after his retirement, Bierly is still on the road, chasing his dream of riding as much United States singletrack as he possibly can until his own time on the Earth runs out.

Added a new video Carbon Frame Manufacturing with Pivot Cycles // Made With Love 6/15/2021 10:33 AM

Mountain bikes are without question the most capable they’ve ever been, yet they can still be better. This notion is what drives innovation. Pivot Cycles has long been committed to this evolutionary process. Through a quest for superb quality, the company has established some of the industry’s most stringent manufacturing standards and continues to push itself in creating the best bikes it possibly can. From the first aluminum prototype, to the in-house carbon creation, to the factory-made final product, every Pivot carbon frame is part of an evolutionary process. Manufacturing—most people don’t think of it as glamorous, but there is an allure to it that inspires and drives creation. The process and production behind modern mountain bikes and their associated products is an art form in itself, one that captivates both bike nerds and bike jocks alike. Made With Love is a series designed to capture the literal nuts and bolts upon which our sport is built: The components and people that bring bikes from the assembly line to trail. --

Added a new video Work and Play in a Custom Van // Built for the Road 4/7/2021 1:35 PM

Training shop techs, hosting clinics and servicing bikes are all in a day’s work for the crew at Modus Sport Group. Covering eight states throughout the Northwest, this is a team that lives for mountain biking, and lives for the road. To meet the demands of their mobile operation, Modus recently built out two new Ford Transit vans for their tech reps to use as they drive everything from city streets to backcountry dirt roads– traveling in style wherever a given job takes them. Join tech rep Aaron Bradford in this video as he walks you through the process of creating his home away from home. His van tour showcases Modus’ overall work philosophy where every painstaking detail is carefully considered. Furthering their commitment to radness and pushing the boundaries of quality, the Modus crew sourced sustainable materials and bought as much as they could from businesses in the local Bend, Oregon region. Examples of that include wool for insulation, lumber from local distributors, and hemp-based wood sealant. Be sure to stop by and say hello if you see Aaron at a race or bike shop. Or, as is common on the quiet byways of the American West, offer up a friendly ol’ two finger wave when you see a big blue Modus van heading in your direction. Such gestures go a long way for a hard working crew who spend much of their time out on the open road. --

Added a new video Kenny Smith Hunts Big Mountain Lines in the Chilean Andes // The Good, The Bad & The Foolhardy 3/30/2021 9:56 AM

Three veteran mountain-bike adventurers—freerider Kenny Smith, photographer Margus Riga and journalist Brice Minnigh—head deep into the Chilean Andes in a multi-day search for singletrack, scree chutes and some elusive, black-powder bowls. Seasoned in the self-styled art of unsupported wilderness bikepacking, the longtime friends adopt a loose expedition plan that leaves plenty of room for spontaneity and shenanigans in a laughter-filled mission that is equal parts Spaghetti Western, The Three Amigos and a twisted Stephen King novel. --

Max Fierek tested positive for Lyme disease when he was nine years old, since then he has fought fatigue, lung capacity, muscle fatigue, short term memory loss and mood swings. For Max, living with Lyme disease for half his life has taught him empathy for others and to cherish his time outside in nature which helps him stay positive and fight for his love of mountain biking. Added a new video Hang On and Think Fast! Jill Kintner Flies Through the Chuckanut Mtn Trees 10/29/2020 12:07 PM

Jill Kintner is one of the most accomplished female mountain bikers in the history of the sport, having dominated in all gravity oriented disciplines. From downhill to slalom to four-cross, and from BMX to pumptrack to enduro, she’s spent most of her racing career on top of podiums. With so much of Jill’s riding happening between the tape, when the pressure is on and the stakes are high, a good old-fashioned trail rip is a real treat—especially when it’s on her hometown trails of Bellingham, Washington. Here’s what a rowdy backyard trail ride is like for Jill Kintner, from her point of view. Everyone interprets a trail differently, and while there’s no wrong way, there are certainly some more impressive ways. Perspective on Velocity aims to unravel the mysteries of speed, line choice and reaction that are unique to the best mountain bikers in the world. British Columbia’s Kootenay mountains contain some of the world’s most unforgiving—and beautiful—terrain. The peaks, ridges and valleys of the region are remote, extensive and rugged, creating the opportunity for a backcountry experience like no other. Less than four miles as the crow flies from Retallack Lodge lies Antoine Basin, a heavily mined, yet seemingly untapped valley, especially when it comes to trailbuilding. Born from the Backcountry, a new film from Freehub Magazine, follows Thomas Vanderham, Veronique Sandler and the Retallack build crew as they spend a week camping and creating in this place of endless potential.

Added a new video Slab City // Sentiers Du Moulin's Newest Trail 3/18/2020 10:06 AM

Slab City is a single black diamond trail located at Sentiers du Moulin, a fast growing enduro mecca located just 15 minutes outside of Quebec City, Canada. The trail bears its name from the off-grid Californian community and reflects the unique experience anyone will have venturing past the trailhead. Only punctuated by a few ladder bridges and some rock arrangements, the trail truly feels like you are riding down a mile of continous rock, weaving its way through the forest. Its porous granite offers phenomenal grip and rides incredibly well even in wet conditions. Born from a partnership between Sentiers du Moulin, Velo Solution Canada and the local volunteer group LBCycle, Slab City is part of a big expansion project known as the Maelstrom trail network. This new zone will offer more than 12 miles of world-class riding by spring 2021, adding up to the existing 25 miles of trail that already make Sentiers du Moulin a must go for enduro enthusiast on the East Coast. The unique mix of geology and topography offered in the Maelstrom zone is one of a kind and the type of riding you wouldn't expect to find on the east coast of Canada. Watch Slab City's visionary and trail builder Nic Sauve ride the trail he dreamed up. --

Added a new video Bougie Backwoods Vacation // Curing the End-of-Season Blues in Oregon 3/2/2020 2:12 PM

Last October, the Free Radicals and three friends spent a week in the backwoods of Oregon, searching for an antidote to their end-of-season blues. Throughout the hunt, their daily agenda evolved into a pattern: Drive out of cell service; keep driving. Pedal several hours to the top of a mountain; bask in the views and solitude of the wild. Turn your bike downhill and ride faster than you ever thought possible, because you know your friends are doing the same thing right behind you. It turns out living, laughing, riding and celebrating as if all else is irrelevant provides the purest cure. -- Subscribe to Freehub Magazine! Added a new video Trail Days // Giving Back With the Free Radicals 2/11/2020 12:19 PM

When they aren’t on the open road, The Free Radicals can be found in the woods riding and digging, all while spreading their love for trails at their favorite riding destinations. In the fall of 2019, after teaming up with Soil Searching, a movement to recognize, celebrate and support trail builders and trail organizations who help shape our sport and stoke, Will and Mark held a number of dig days in the Pacific Northwest. With the help of a bunch of new friends, they were able to put in a significant amount of time building and maintaining existing trails in hopes to inspire others to give back and get involved in their local riding communities. With your help, we hope to raise $30,000 to donate to WMBC, OMBC and SORCA. To do this, we’re raffling off a custom Soil Searching Specialized Stumpjumper, with all proceeds going directly to trail advocacy groups. Between teaching mechanic classes and running the pits for Liv Cycling, Brousseau is continually growing and supporting her community through the ways of the wrench. -- Subscribe to Freehub Magazine!
