Added a new video The Escape Artist // Thomas Vanderham 11/28/2017 10:40 AM
C138x104

Thomas Vanderham's moment of clarity came when he was ten years old. After witnessing a neighbor kid doing wheelies in an alley, Vanderham set out to master the technique himself. His first attempt was spastic and short lived, but for a brief moment he felt that perfect balance point. That feeling, the one that fluttered through him during that first wheelie attempt, is one he has continued to chase his entire life.

We all seek the feeling that ten-year-old Thomas had. When we find it, we want to milk it and are constantly trying to re-create it. We search for it on the weekends and in our free time. We daydream about it and occasionally—perhaps while waiting for a train to cross—we'll even slip back into that feeling again, even if only for a moment. It calls to us, driving us to push through pain and fear. It frees us from the rut of routine life, which is exactly what our bodies and minds crave. After all, we're all just looking for an escape.

As the season wound down after Trans-Cascadia, the crew was a bit worn out from a long year on the road, including Elaine. When she ran out of steam shortly into the drive home, Will found himself with some unscheduled free time in Northern Oregon. The boys at Outside Van supplied the custom slab and local savage Daven Kuder supplied the tour. The Free Radicals are four guys who are just trying to ride some bikes. We live in vans, work seasonal jobs and eschew the comforts and constraints of traditional lives in order to ride our bikes as much as humanly possible. Racing is the impetus for our travels, but we live for the in-betweens: the hidden trails, local swimming holes and general mischief encountered while on the road.

Added a new video Free Candy Tour // E6: Full Dust Warfare 10/12/2017 12:26 PM
C138x104

Widespread drought and wildfires were ravaging British Columbia all around us. Our helicopter departed the landing strip in Revelstoke and we entered the smokey abyss that encompassed the valley. As we gained elevation, we suddenly found ourselves above the smoke. A landscape of jagged peaks appeared before us. The helicopter set down on a knife edge ridge, where our friends were waiting for us. We unloaded our bikes, tagged in with our timing chips, and raced back down a narrow, powdery trail towards the smoke. This was full dust warfare at the Revelstoke 3-Day Heli Enduro. After the race, we headed to Nelson with our friend Nate “Forrealz” Hills and engaged in another skirmish.

Added a new video Katie Holden's Perfect Day // A Video Diary 9/26/2017 9:46 AM
C138x104

A few months ago, we asked Katie Holden to show us what a perfect day on a bike looks like to her. She decided to rally some friends and head to Disneyland—not the California park, but the trail outside Squamish, BC. Katie, along with friends Rémy Métailler, Robin O'Neill and Chris Clark, loaded up the helicopter, spent the night in the alpine and took off in the morning to navigate snow fields, swim in alpine lakes and send zesty rock rolls, sharing a lot of laughs along the way. Looks like a pretty perfect way to spend a day to us! -- What does your perfect day look like? Show us in a 1-3 min video and you could have a chance to win a GoPro Karma kit complete with a Hero5 Black, gimball, and drone. Added a new video Made With Love // Industry Nine 9/19/2017 10:53 AM
C138x104

Most people might know Industry Nine by its wheel’s signature buzz, and while the internals that create the noise are impressive, the process and community behind the entire wheel itself is equally remarkable. Since the company’s first wheels hit the ground in 2004, it has been continually innovating every process involved, be it at the drawing board, in machine shop or on the assembly line. Get a glimpse of the process—from lathing to lacing—in this episode of Made With Love. Manufacturing—most people don’t think of it as glamorous, but there is an allure to it that inspires and drives creation. The process and production behind modern mountain bikes and their associated products is an art form in itself, one that captivates both bike nerds and bike jocks alike. Made With Love is a series designed to capture the literal nuts and bolts upon which our sport is built: The components and people that bring bikes from the assembly line to trail.

Added a new video Free Candy Tour // E5: On Island Time 9/14/2017 9:45 AM
C138x104

British Columbia’s coastal islands are located within eyeshot of the mainland and accessed by just a short ferry ride or two from Vancouver. However, upon arrival it felt like we had been transported to an alternate universe, or at least a different time zone. Cell reception was spotty at best, traffic and crowds simply didn’t exist, and 11 a.m. seemed to be the start of business hours. The pace of life was so relaxing that we almost forget to ride our bikes. When we did, we were greeted with low angle, ripping trails and hero traction from Cumberland to Cambell River, Quadra Island and Hornby Island. Added a new video Gotta Get Up to Get Down // Bikepacking Sun Valley's Sawtooth Singletrack 9/12/2017 12:47 PM
C138x104

When childhood friends Brandon Watts and Steve Dempsey were looking for a new type of biking adventure, they turned their attention to bikepacking. After a few chats, they decided that they wanted to do a trip where they could fly somewhere with their bikes, hop off the plane and begin riding. No cars, no shuttles; just go, ride and return. They began scouring maps for location that would suit their fly-in, bike, fly-out goals and after poking around for a bit, they landed on Sun Valley, ID.

Sun Valley provided an ideal location for the adventure with its sprawling network of bike paths and singletrack that connect the downtown area to even the most remote parts of the valley and surrounding Sawtooth National Forest. With the location decided, tickets were purchased and bikes were packed as Brandon and Steve set out to cover a grueling 113 mile route with over 16,000 feet of climbing. Their route would take them from the Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey, ID up to the Sun Valley Resort, over to Coyote Yurt before ending at the Galena Lodge Miner's Yurt. Over the course of five days, they would experience rain, heat, seemingly never-ending climbs, creek crossings, dirt naps and water shortages. However, those challenges were greatly outweighed by the striking vistas, bleak yet beautiful burn zones, alpine meadows, hot springs and the boundless memories created through the shared suffering of two friends.

For more insights and information on this adventure, read Steve Dempsey's trip notes in our feature, Gotta Get Up to Get Down // A Journal of Navigating Sun Valley's Epic Singletrack.

Added a new video The Journalist // A Video Portrait of Living Large with Brice Minnigh 8/29/2017 10:16 AM
C138x104

Brice Minnigh’s day job (up until April of this year) might have been Editor-in-Chief at Bike Magazine, but his life story is more in line with a globe-trotting adventurer. From being a foreign correspondent in Moscow during the collapse of the Soviet Union, riding his bike from Beijing to Pakistan, embarking on a 30-day expedition to the North Pole or sitting next to Muhammad Ali at a puppet show in North Korea (it’s true), Minnigh has no shortage of stories. But along with his many adventures and accolades, his outlook on life is as inspiring as it is refreshing, and perhaps the reason he’s accomplished (and survived) such a grand list of endeavors. Few people are as involved in the many facets of mountain biking as Kyle Jameson. Added a new video Thursday Night Therapy // Whistler's Toonie Rides 7/4/2017 9:25 AM
C138x104

Whistler’s Thursday night Toonie Ride is one of the best traditions in the valley. Going on twenty-eight years, it is now as much of a communal gathering as it is a weekly ride. With a crowd of two to three hundred people sometimes showing up, the evening cultivates stoke, brings new bikers into the mix and gives back to WORCA, the local trail association responsible for so many of the area’s awesome trails. Over the years, the Toonie Ride has evolved into something much bigger—and more important—than ever intended; it has become a celebration of one of the world’s most renown riding communities. Added a new video Free Candy Tour // E3: Fading Sanity and a Three-Winged Chicken at the NZ Enduro 6/13/2017 10:00 AM
C138x104

There comes a point toward the end of any road trip when both the passengers and the vehicle begin approaching a state of disorder, both physically and emotionally. This is the point we are at as we arrive in Havelock for the NZ Enduro. Combined with three days of torrential rain, any aspirations of “racing” are replaced with mere survival. We make it through the event by any means necessary: tripoding, scootering and flat out walking. After the race, we explore the steep trails, lush forests and diverse bird populations between Havelock and Nelson. Our birding is amateur at best, but we do manage to identify a three-winged chicken in the takeaways section of a Nelson grocery. Added a new video Free Candy Tour // E2: A Case of the Madness at the Trans NZ Enduro 5/9/2017 9:57 AM
C138x104

The Trans NZ Enduro provides everything you need for a positive racing experience: Party Trains. Off trail excursions, resulting in near death experiences. New friends and legends. Life management. Day drinking. We also happened to be racing the course blind, which means no pre-riding, no practice logistics to work out, no real race strategy. There are no start times to rush to meet each morning, and each night, there is no helmet cam footage to review in preparation for the upcoming day. With no idea what terrain each day will bring, there is no pressure, regardless of current standings. What there are plenty of, however, are moments. Moments of brilliance, when we link turns on unfamiliar stages perfectly, at a pace that is only achieved when racing. Moments of terror, when our calculations are slightly less accurate and leave our bodies and bikes tomahawking through the woods. And moments of intense gyration, when Paul “DJ Vandy Van” van der Ploeg gets ahold of the auxiliary cord at the after party. It’s certainly madness, but it’s damn fun.

C138x104

Hosting a Fest event is akin to throwing a huge party for all of your good friends. But that's often the easy part—it’s building the course that is the real challenge. After a winter of unprecedented snow in Oregon, Kyle Jameson and Carson Storch have been working non-stop on the build for the Black Sage Fest. With Kyle’s experience building Cruz Fest and Carson’s connections in Oregon, these boys have created the perfect venue, putting an insane amount of blood, sweat and beers into making the entire event come to fruition. Once the build is done, it’s time for the party.
