Every trail has a story—be it behind the name, behind the location or behind the builder. In Whistler, British Columbia, arguably the Mecca of mountain biking, the number (and quality) of trails is astounding. And, of course, each one has it's own unique story of creation. Three Whistler classics—River Runs Through It, Dirt Merchant and Rockwork Orange—each have their own style and saga. -- Subscribe to Freehub Magazine! Added a new video Lost & Found // Hidden Treasure in the Lost Sierra 6/12/2018 10:16 AM
C138x104

Trails inevitably come and go, but rarely are they lost forever. In California’s Northern Sierra Nevada, between Downieville and Sierra City, the area’s mining history contributed to a network of trails that faded away with the Gold Rush. But now, recreation has begun their resurrection, contributing to the local small-town economies and preserving the area’s rich history. Professional mountain biker Eric Porter and Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship’s trail whisperer Kurt Gensheimer spent a week in the Lost Sierra this past fall, riding forgotten trails and finding a different kind of wealth than the area is known for. Added a new video Session Series // Episode 1: Spring with the Free Radicals 5/31/2018 9:52 AM
C138x104

Spring is a natural time for celebration, and this year the Free Radicals had lots to celebrate. Will’s hand was successfully re-attached to his arm, Mark was finished working in the Polar Vortex of Prince George, BC and after 4 years of full-time service, the increasingly unreliable van, Elaine, was swapped out for a bougie 1991 21ft Gulfstream RV. Shout out to Vince for the steal-of-a-deal. Oh, did we mention the trails in British Columbia are in all-time condition. -- Subscribe to Freehub Magazine! Added a new video Guaranteed Adventure // New Zealand, Four Bikes, One Van and No Plan 3/13/2018 10:09 AM
C138x104

Adventures don't have to be deliberate affairs. They don't need to involve remote destinations, premeditated objectives or detailed plans. Last winter, four of us explored the South Island of New Zealand in a severely clapped out van, but our adventure could have really taken place anywhere. So pack your friends in a van, or whatever vehicle you have access to, and go find some new trails to ride. Don't worry, something will go wrong. Added a new video The Art of Adventure // Chapter 3: Joey Schusler's Time to Reflect 2/6/2018 10:01 AM
C138x104

Adventures are often glorified as wild missions to exotic places, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. The Colorado River and its surrounding terrain is a natural wonder not far from Joey’s house and the perfect place to escape on a solo, multi-day bike rafting trip. There’s no better way to step back from the whirlwind of daily life than by sleeping under the stars. About This Series: With roots in Boulder, CO, the mountains have been a formative force in Joey Schusler’s life. However, after nearly a decade of racing—climbing the ranks from local races to the UCI World Cup—his focus began to shift toward filmmaking, seeing how far his bike could take him, not just how fast he could go. In the years since, he’s traveled the world with his camera, bike and best friends, exploring rugged and remote areas, telling the stories of places and their people. For Joey, adventuring is not only a lifestyle, but an art form. Joey Schusler found his love for mountain biking at the ripe age of 13. As a young teenager, few things rivaled the exhilaration. He set his sights on racing professionally, and by 2010 was doing just that as part of Yeti’s World Cup team. Yet for as fun as racing was, Joey soon fell in love with bikepacking, a change in direction that would provide new meaning to life on the bike. Added a new video Tour de Tahoe // Bikepacking and Fly Fishing in the Sierra Mountains 1/2/2018 9:54 AM
C138x104

All we wanted to do was catch fish and ride our bikes. We did a lot of the latter. Add in a drivetrain explosion and fifteen stitches and things get interesting. Despite a few hiccups, morale was at an all-time high during our three-day, sixty mile bikepacking and fly fishing trip along the Tahoe Rim Trail. The pace was slow and the fish were non-existent, but the good times were plentiful. Continue the story with "Welcome to the Gong Show" from Issue 8.4 for free! Subscribe to Freehub Magazine! Added a new video The Escape Artist // Thomas Vanderham 11/28/2017 10:40 AM
C138x104

Thomas Vanderham's moment of clarity came when he was ten years old. After witnessing a neighbor kid doing wheelies in an alley, Vanderham set out to master the technique himself. His first attempt was spastic and short lived, but for a brief moment he felt that perfect balance point. That feeling, the one that fluttered through him during that first wheelie attempt, is one he has continued to chase his entire life.

We all seek the feeling that ten-year-old Thomas had. When we find it, we want to milk it and are constantly trying to re-create it. We search for it on the weekends and in our free time. We daydream about it and occasionally—perhaps while waiting for a train to cross—we'll even slip back into that feeling again, even if only for a moment. It calls to us, driving us to push through pain and fear. It frees us from the rut of routine life, which is exactly what our bodies and minds crave. After all, we're all just looking for an escape.

Added a new video Free Candy Tour // E7: Broken Down in Oregon 11/8/2017 11:22 AM
C138x104

As the season wound down after Trans-Cascadia, the crew was a bit worn out from a long year on the road, including Elaine. When she ran out of steam shortly into the drive home, Will found himself with some unscheduled free time in Northern Oregon. The boys at Outside Van supplied the custom slab and local savage Daven Kuder supplied the tour. The Free Radicals are four guys who are just trying to ride some bikes. We live in vans, work seasonal jobs and eschew the comforts and constraints of traditional lives in order to ride our bikes as much as humanly possible. Racing is the impetus for our travels, but we live for the in-betweens: the hidden trails, local swimming holes and general mischief encountered while on the road.

Added a new video Free Candy Tour // E6: Full Dust Warfare 10/12/2017 12:26 PM
C138x104

Widespread drought and wildfires were ravaging British Columbia all around us. Our helicopter departed the landing strip in Revelstoke and we entered the smokey abyss that encompassed the valley. As we gained elevation, we suddenly found ourselves above the smoke. A landscape of jagged peaks appeared before us. The helicopter set down on a knife edge ridge, where our friends were waiting for us. We unloaded our bikes, tagged in with our timing chips, and raced back down a narrow, powdery trail towards the smoke. This was full dust warfare at the Revelstoke 3-Day Heli Enduro. After the race, we headed to Nelson with our friend Nate “Forrealz” Hills and engaged in another skirmish.

Added a new video Katie Holden's Perfect Day // A Video Diary 9/26/2017 9:46 AM
C138x104

A few months ago, we asked Katie Holden to show us what a perfect day on a bike looks like to her. She decided to rally some friends and head to Disneyland—not the California park, but the trail outside Squamish, BC. Katie, along with friends Rémy Métailler, Robin O'Neill and Chris Clark, loaded up the helicopter, spent the night in the alpine and took off in the morning to navigate snow fields, swim in alpine lakes and send zesty rock rolls, sharing a lot of laughs along the way. Looks like a pretty perfect way to spend a day to us! -- What does your perfect day look like? Show us in a 1-3 min video and you could have a chance to win a GoPro Karma kit complete with a Hero5 Black, gimball, and drone.
